The Comparative Analysis
A comparative analysis is a study that compares or contrasts two or more things.
More specifically, for this class, the analysis will be of interventions, from differing theoretical perspectives or models, aimed at ameliorating a social problem.
The Comparative Analysis
For this assignment you will identify four peer-reviewed articles in which an intervention is described and a quantitative evaluation is conducted and the results are provided.
These articles should have interventions representing different approaches to address the social problems. These are considered to be the “exemplars” for the comparative analysis.
Steps for selecting Exemplars
Select a social problem of significance to social work intervention and practice.
Identify a specific target population which will be the focus of intervention.

Conduct a literature review in relevant library data bases searching for interventions.
Visiting websites of organizations may also yield interventions focused on ameliorating social problems. These may included (but not limited to):
Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)
The Cochrane Library
The National Child Traumatic Stress Network
Veterans Administration National Center for PTSD
Guidelines for Selection
Although it’s important to keep in mind that the articles for the comparative analysis haven’t been written with this assignment in mind, ideally, they should have a well described intervention that includes:
The theoretical orientation of the intervention
The structure of the intervention, including frequency of intervention sessions and the duration of the intervention.
The goals and objectives of the intervention.
A sense of the activities that take place as part of the intervention in an effort to facilitate participants’ goal achievement.
Guidelines for Selection
A description of the evaluation of the intervention that includes:
A purpose statement that indicates that the evaluation is directed at determine outcome for the intervention.
Is quantitative in nature;
Describes the data collection procedures;
Describes specific measures or scales used to measure outcomes;
Provides the results of the intervention
Includes a discussion of the results, including limitations.
Guidelines for Selection
Meta analysis, which is a synthesis of outcomes for several evaluations is not acceptable for this comparative analysis.
However, you can use the bibliography from this article to search for specific interventions with evaluations that meet aforementioned critieria.
