Segment Analysis

David, your manager at Springfield Youth Baseball (SYB), would like you to learn how to optimize a website for a target audience using Google Analytics. In order to gain experience with the tool, he asks you to perform a segment analysis using the Google Merchandise Store's data in their demo account. The demo account will allow you to explore business data and get to know Google Analytics features that you can later use to analyze SYB.

In this project part, you will create a custom segment and suggest ways that the Google Merchandise Store could enhance their potential optimizations.

You will complete these tasks by compiling a report in the accompanying doc to this lab. To complete these tasks, work through the instructions in the following steps.

Step 1: Create a Segment

In the doc that accompanies this lab, navigate to the section titled “Part F: Segment Analysis”. This is where you will provide your manager David with the information he has requested.

Open the Google Analytics account for the Google Merchandise Store in a separate tab or window. Make sure you are in master view.

You may need to create a new Google account in a private window to access this lab. Take the follow steps:

1. Open your browser in a private window. If you use Google Chrome, navigate to File → New Incognito Window, For Safari or Firefox, navigate to New → Private Window.

2.  Create a new Google (Gmail) Account. Follow this link. Complete all fields but do NOT enter your phone number.

3.  Add the Google Analytics Demo Account to your new Google Account. Copy and past the following link into a private window: https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/6367342?hl=en. Select the ACCESS DEMO ACCOUNT button. If you see a pop-up  for “My Email Communications”, set your preferences and click “Save”.

4. Access the Pathstream labs that use Google Analytics. You need to access Pathstream in the private window, otherwise it may not use the Google account you just created. In the private window, navigate to Pathstream through your LMS (Blackboard, Canvas, Brightspace, or Moodle). Navigate to the lesson with the Google Analytics labs. Click “Launch Lab”. If you have not downloaded the Pathstream app, follow the steps to download it when prompted. If prompted to “Choose an account”, be sure to sign in with the Google account you just created (you may have to click “Add account” at the bottom).

5. Make sure you are in the correct Google Account. You can click in the top right (just below the “Show Tools” button) to check which Google account you are logged into.

Using the date range March 1, 2017 – May 31, 2017, create one custom segment that represents at least 8 percent of total users.

Take a screenshot of the segment summary in the right sidebar of your segment builder and paste it into the Google doc under “Take a screenshot of your segment summary…”.

Step 2: Segment Information
