Security Risk Management Plans and the Community This week we will look at critical infrastructure security planning from a strategic point of view. We will look at why models are so important to security risk planning within the community, particularly private dwellings. Have you every thought about having a security plan for your home for you and your family? We will review some of the major risk assessment models and why some are more effective for certain types of infrastructure that are conducive to private residences. There are many approaches and methods to use for critical infrastructure protection, and it is a key part of any security risk management professional to be aware of all options and available resources in developing the best plan to counteract the risk faced.
Community risk is defined as a process to "identify and prioritize local risks, followed by the integrated and strategic investment of resources to reduce their occurrence and impact" (Stouffer, 2016, p. 1). As we know, risk management is the concept of identifying, assessing, and controlling threats and vulnerabilities within an organization. Risk mitigation processes are also a way to increase security maturity within an entity because it allows agencies to methodically strategize and formulate programs that are unique to the mission, vision and specific operations. General questions that are asked when it comes to security risk management processes are:
How many times (if any) was the organization attacked? Is there a threat to our company? How well-protected are corporate secrets and data (Impe, 2017).
Think about how these questions and ideologies can apply to personal dwellings. Information collected to answer the aforementioned questions can be used as security tools and resources to provide relevant information for homeowners to establish essential security plans to cover all aspects of protecting a home. Additionally, such sources can be cost- effective to communities and households. After all, risk management methods should not be expensive and complicated.
