PETE 7006 Secondary Final Exam (40 pts)

Fall, 2020

Directions: The following eight (8) short essay questions or statements are based on the secondary part of this course. You are to choose any four (4) of these questions to answer. Using the resources posted on eCourseware, such as the PowerPoints that align with the text book, Dynamic Physical Education for Secondary School Students, your clinical experiences, your past experiences teaching children, and information gleaned from your other assignments; provide your response in a Word document using at least two or three (2 or 3) thorough paragraphs for each question chosen, double spaced, 10-12 point font, no bold, 1 inch margins all around. READ THE WHOLE QUESTION CAREFULLY! And answer ALL parts that are found in each question. Submit to the Dropbox by Sunday, Oct. 4th at 11:59 pm. I will be engaging the plagiarism check on these documents, so if you use published comments from our textbook, a journal article, or a blurb from a web site, you must cite the source. You are encouraged to use other research to support your answers (make sure to cite any & all research), if you believe these quotes/comments will defend your response. Just don’t forget to cite this source—if you don’t, this is plagiarism as it looks like you might have hijacked this idea. Give credit where credit is due.

1. In the first week PowerPoint (Chapter 1-Physical Education in the Secondary School-Introduction-both old & new books), the Essential Components of a Quality Program are described on Slide #10 new book PPT; Slide #20-old book PPT. In your own words, describe the three (3) components that you believe are the “top 3” and describe each of these components using a real-life example from your clinical teaching experience or another experience.

2. Physical activity can influence our youth, and has been well researched and documented. The second week PowerPoint (Chapter 2-The Impact of Physical Activity on Adolescents-old book) describes how physical activity can positively affect academic performance and overall health. Unfortunately, participation in physical activity drops at drastic rates in middle school (especially for females). In your own words, choose and describe three (3) different ways or strategies that you plan to use to help motivate your future secondary-level students to be more active.

3. How to best develop, evaluate, and modify a quality PE curriculum/program was discussed in the Steps in Developing a Curriculum (Ch. 3 both old book & new) and Curriculum Approaches (Ch. 2-new book; Ch. 4-old book) PPTs. Pretend you are hired as a curriculum coordinator for physical education in a small school system. Describe how you would determine the activities/sports that would interest/motivate your school system’s secondary students, and how you would measure (assessments or data) if the curriculum was effective or not. And then using this data, how would you possibly modify the curriculum to be more effective?

4. Classroom management is one of the most discussed topics in education. In Management and Discipline (Ch. 7-both books) PPT, strategies are described that focus on how to manage student behavior. Describe in detail three (3) of these strategies and how you would personally implement these into a future secondary PE classroom.

5. Various ways of teaching and how you use them in a physical education setting were displayed and explained in the Teaching Styles (Ch. 6-new book; Ch. 8-old book) PPT. Without using the Direct Style, which is typically used (overused) in almost all PE and Health classrooms, describe two (2) other teaching styles/instructional models and how you would implement these styles into a basketball unit in 8th grade. Give detailed examples of lesson activities that you would include in this basketball unit that showcase each of the teaching styles you choose. Remember… do NOT use the Direct Style.

6. Assessment, evaluation, and grading in physical education have become very important. Using a 9th grade typical unit of volleyball, detail how you would set up an assessment plan, what assessments you would include, and the percentage (or points) for each assessment. List these assessments and the total number of points for each assessment. Describe how these assessments connect with the National Standards for Physical Education.

7. Writing rubrics for assessment is an essential skill to master. Using a soccer unit for 7th grade, pick a skill—dribble & pass, dribble & shoot on goal, or tackling/taking the ball. Then construct a sound and authentic rubric for this skill using levels of proficient (excellent or above grade level), target (grade level or satisfactory) needs work (below grade level or slightly below average), and needs intervention (very poor performance).

8. Physical fitness education could be considered our number one content unit to deliver. Using the FitnessGram videos and Chapter 15-new; Ch. 16-old Physical Fitness PPT, describe the four (4) fitness tests (PACER, Curl-ups, Push-ups, & Back Saver Sit & Reach) and how you would implement these tests into your PE classroom. Choosing just two (2) of the 4 tests, how would you guide and motivate your students to improve their scores?
