Response Question 1: Hello Class, Please discuss your experiences of success and struggles with State Standards in your career and how these experiences can help us in this class grow personally and professionally.

Discussion 2: In addition to state standards in STEM subjects, the Next Generation Science Standards are also referenced when creating STEM lessons. After reviewing the NGSS, discuss how Next Generation Science Standards prepare students for the rigor of college, career, and citizenship. How do the standards contribute to increased content knowledge and professional skills?

Response Question 2: Jennifer wrote: The state standards in California actually are the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). These standards are very thorough in the sense of what skills and knowledge students must master during these classes. These skills are considered the basic knowledge necessary for success in college or even going directly into the workforce. Additionally, the Science and Engineering Practice and Crosscutting Concept sections help develop interdisciplinary skills that will be necessary in other high school classes, college, and the workforce. For example, many of the Science and Engineering Practice points revolve around problem solving and planning (California Department of Education, 2020).

In the first discussion topic this week, I had only looked at the standard on the California Department of Education website. For this question, I ended up exploring the official Next Generation Science Standards website, and I love that they have a quick search for standards! My critique in DQ #1 was that the document made it semi-difficult to find the information given that all subjects were grouped together. The official website solves this problem by allowing you to search for what you need!
