Assignment Description: Research the development/progression of the academic standards in your state.

Write a 750-1000 word summary describing the teaching and learning changes your state will or has experienced through shifts in required standards.

**Word count begins with the first word of the Intro & stops at the final word in the Conclusion.**

SO – use ONE paragraph to tell me what the K-12 Academic Standards are called in your State. Share when they were adopted. What did they replace? Are there any interesting details as your State adopted and implemented these standards? Do NOT list the standards or list out what subjects are covered.

In three to five solid paragraphs discuss the changes that have occurred as a result of the change in academic standards. Changes to teaching, instruction, curriculum, and assessment are common. Changes to the teachers, students, and families are also possible topics to discuss.

After your essay and the conclusion, begin a new section in the paper – Reflection. Do a self-evaluation of your essay. This should be a 100-250-word reflection evaluating your work; discuss the score you would give yourself and why. Be sure to justify a score for each of the criteria listed in the respective rubric. The objective to evaluate your own summary provides knowledge to understand and create effective rubrics. This self-reflection should be in a separate section of your document. It is NOT your Conclusion.

Title of Your Paper

This first paragraph is your introduction (Approximately 100-150 words). Begin with a strong grabber/intro statement go get the reader’s attention. End it with a killer purpose statement. The Purpose Statement is like a thesis statement only slightly different. The main ideas of the overall essay must be here in your Introduction. From those, the Purpose Statement provides the purpose, scope, and direction of the paper. A Purpose Statement generally has common beginnings like “This paper examines”, “The aim of this paper”, or “The purpose of this essay is to…” Comment by Sonya Berges: The Purpose Statement is like a thesis statement only slightly different. Academic Standards in XXXXXXXXX (Your State)

Begin this paragraph with a strong topic sentence. Paragraphs are 4 to 6 sentences in length. I need to see the following items in this section. (Approx 200-250 words)

· What is the name of the K-12 Academic Standards in your State?

· Does your state participate in the Common Core State Standards?

· If so, when did they begin? If not, why not? You will find plenty of information either way. Did they change the name? Change the standards?

· Find at least one article that discusses Common Core in your state and cite it. Hint… look in local newspapers. Common Core debate has been in nearly every state.

Changes in XXXXXXXX

Discuss the areas that have experienced change due to the changes in standards. You might discuss changes to teaching, instruction, curriculum, and/or assessment. You could discuss changes to the teachers, students, and/or families. Each paragraph should be 4 to 6 sentences in length. Support each paragraph and the ideas in them with citations. Copy the Section Heading and re-use it with each change you decide to discuss. You will likely need to discuss two to three changes to reach our required word count.

Conclusion

Many people simply slop through their conclusions and do not put much effort into it. This paragraph is just as important as any other paragraph in this essay. For help, please watch this great video on how to write a killer conclusion. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2L7aeO9fBzE Make it strong and end with a bang! (Approximately 00-150 words).

Reflection

Continue your summary with a 100-250-word reflection evaluating your essay; discuss the score you would give yourself and why. I am looking for solid justification on each of the Rows in the rubric. The objective here is to help you build the habit of evaluating your own work prior to submission. Instructors must score your work against the rubric. Increase your learning and your understanding as well as your score and carefully review your work against the rubric. Locate the Rubric in the top right-hand corner of the assignment page under the link “View Rubrics.”
