(Taha says): Gun violence has become persistent in our nation, and has infiltrated the very fabric of our society.

It has become a problem that seems unfixable, and the only feasible solution, gun control, is being rejected.

Why is that?

Welcome to this special podcast where we will be discussing why gun control has become so difficult in the United States.

Taha says: In 2019 alone, more than 30,000 people had already lost their lives by September due to gun violence. Of these, approximately, 18000 were suicides, with accidental shootings, and homicides making up the rest of the numbers.

(Taha says): In 2019 alone, there has been a mass shooting in the country almost every day of the year with multiple deaths and casualties in every incidence.

It is clear that gun violence is taking a heavy toll on the society, and there needs to be effective gun control policies that can help bring gun violence under control.

Sadly, gun control has been evasive since the American constitution was enacted. The constitution made it a right for everyone to bear arms, and all forms of gun control are seen by specific parties as a way of infringing on people’s rights to bear arms.

The NRA has been successfully lobbying against gun control policies since the 1960s. This organisation’s lobbying power is undeniable seeing as they have been able to use Congress to push its often racist, nationalistic, and biased agenda. All government attempts at passing laws that control gun use and gun ownership in the country have been rejected or repealed by thanks to the powerful lobbying of the NRA.

In order for effective gun control policies to be passed and implemented, the lobbying power of NRA needs to be curtailed. However, this is not the only solution available at hand.

These solutions include: spending more money on research into gun violence as a matter of public health. If treated as a public health issue, gun violence can finally get the attention it needs from the relevant stakeholders.

With more research, more facts and statistics can be generated. These can then help inform government policies on how to curb this ongoing disaster.

For instance, research can help government determine which firearms need to be banned for causing the most damage.

Another long term, and effective strategy would be to apply behavioural analysis when it comes to gun use and ownership. Red flag laws stem from behavioural analysis, and entail family members and law enforcement petition the court to withdraw firearm access to individuals whose recent behaviour is deemed as high risk for gun violence.

Behavioural analysis can also be used to predict future gun violence by studying current behavioural patterns. This can help stop the risk before it becomes an actuality.
