Yvonne: Hi, my name is Yv.... . I am a student enrolled in Discovery ….... Online course at the University of the …..... I picked this topic because I am a 50+ student dealing with the ups and downs of higher education. My online research offered me a limited amount of data as this topic is not as talked about as needed. The first thing that I looked into were the high number of older students attending universities today. In 2011, the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) cited over one and a half million adult students. The numbers show the importance of education as worthy topic of interest. Throughout my research, I learned that older students are more determined to learn due to life experiences. Making the decision to return to college later should be treated like a research project. The rise of computers eliminates jobs forcing reentry or career change. Higher education encourages high self-esteem. Higher Education Bill statistics predict that by 2020, 35% of job openings will require a degree. I found that continuing education in the elderly contributes to successful aging. It is stated that older students are not socially inclusive by educators or younger students. “Older” and “elderly” needs revision to further solidify the need to support 50+ students in higher education more effectively. I hope to heighten awareness enough to start the conversation. All students will benefit rom more flexibility in the educational structure. Educators need to focus on bridging the gap amongst all students. There needs to be an in-depth review centering on the knowledge, life experiences and maturity of older students within universities. These things incorporated in more accommodating efforts will benefit all. It takes a village, right? |
