Hello Class and Professor,

The article I chose for this weeks discussion is "Five planets revealed after 20 years of observation". In the article it explains 4000 exoplanets have been discovered since the first one in 1995. Majority of them orbit their stars with short periods of revolution. To confirm the presence of a planet it is best to wait until it has made one or more revolutions around its star. It could take a few days for the the closet star to decades for the furthest away.

It took Jupiter 11 years to go around the sun. The Euler telescope is what was used to discover these planets. Most of the massive planets close to their stars are the easiest to detect relying on the current technology that is being used. Almost all planets have been discovered using two main indirect methods, 1. Radical velocities, measures the gravatational influence of a planet on its star.2.Transits, It detect the mini eclipse caused by a planet passing in front of its star.
