Discussion Board due 7.19.2020 @ 9pm EST
ORIGINAL POST
Write a creative scenario making up appropriate life events and symptoms that describe an individual with
Schizoaffective disorder and demonstrate why you have ruled out a Bi-polar disorder. Be sure and pepper it
with enough evidence that one might argue for a Bi-polar Disorder, but ultimately make it Schizoaffective.
Throw in some drug use or abuse if you want to; anything to make it more interesting. Then post your case and
respond to the cases of at least two other students in terms of what you like or are confused about their scenario.
You will be graded on creativity as well as your critiques of other student's scenarios. Be creative!
Classmate #1
George Wazington is a 24-year-old male who grew up with an interest in school and soccer. When he was a
senior in High School, he moved to Mexico with his family and learned the language and culture. It was during
this time in his life that he first experienced a hallucination. He first saw a red plan fly by and then a red bus. He
believed that seeing double red meant that someone in his family will die.
When he turned 23, he found himself in another stressful situation causing him to lose sleep. For the past 7
months, George has been suffering from intrusive thoughts that he needs to do certain actions or his skin will
melt from the sun. These actions include walking in the same footsteps as the person in front of him. These
thoughts and seeing things have caused him to lose focus on his job at the college chemistry lab. George has
stopped going to school for the past week and has been sleeping more during the day and staying awake at
night.
Classmate #2
Fran is a 22-year-old Caucasian female that recently has been arrested for breaking and entering into a local
establishment. When detained by the police she stated that she has been “planted” on earth by a superior race to
observe and report back her observations. She reports receiving messages and instructions by telepathy from
this superior race and can be seen engaged in conversation with this invisible entity.
Fran’s family describes Fran as easy going and eager to help anyone in need. They report that she has had no
previous medical or psychiatric history but that she began to behave strangely several weeks ago. She stopped
coming into work and declined invitations to meet with friends. She appeared unkept and began talking about
being spied on by aliens. Her family became concerned when she appeared to be losing weight, stopped leaving
her house and seemed to just sit for hours in the same place doing nothing. They state that Fran is certain that
the aliens have inserted a device into her brain to monitor her thoughts. Her delusions have escalated over the
last two weeks and now she appears to hold conversations with individuals that aren’t there on a regular basis.
Fran is demonstrating symptoms of Schizoaffective disorder. She presents with major depressive symptoms
concurrent with criterion A of Schizophrenia.
