Identifying Arab, Muslim, and Middle Eastern Americans

Distinguish among Muslim, Arab, and Middle Eastern Americans

The three identifiers “Arab,” “Muslim,” and “Middle Eastern” are frequently used interchangeably, but each term applies to very different people in the United States

Collectively, in the misguided view of orientalism, Middle Easterners are lumped together and collectively subjected to prejudice and discrimination but are not eligible for supportive efforts such as affirmative action

The Arab American and Muslim American communities are among the most rapidly growing subordinate groups in the United States

Immigration to the United States

Summarize Muslim and Arab immigration to the United States.

Significant proportion of African slaves were followers of Islam

Spanish Muslims accompanied explorers and conquistadores to the Americas

Arabs immigrated as the result of encouragement from U.S. funded missionary programs in the Middle East

Immediate aftermath of 9/11 led to about a 30 percent decline in Arabs and Muslims immigrating to the United States because of their apprehension over the reception they would receive and increased scrutiny of their entry documents by the federal government

Opponents of President Trumps travel ban, characterized the ban as a twenty-first century example of nativism, a set of beliefs and policies favoring native-born citizens over immigrants

Islamophobia

Explain Islamophobia

Phrase casual Islamophobia describes statements previously regarded as extreme that are now becoming accepted by large portions of the general public

Given all this unrest, casual Islamophobia, and continuing debates over immigration policy as it relates to overseas Muslims and Arabs, how does this segment of the population go about its everyday life in the United States?
