>> Okay hi. My name is Paula, I'm a counselor here at the center. What's your name? >> Hi, I'm Sarah. >> Okay. What brings you in today Sarah? >> Well, this morning when I woke up I was in a bed at the fraternity house. >> Okay. >> And as soon as, I couldn't figure out where I was at first and I was, I was lookin' around and, and then I saw my clothes layin' on the floor and so I got my clothes and then I just ran out of there and ran back to my dorm. And, and got a shower and I just didn't know what to do and, and I, I saw this place online and I thought I should come in and talk to someone. I think I was raped. >> Okay first I just want to commend you for coming in. It's a very brave thing to do and I'm very glad you were able to come in today. It sounds like you're not sure what exactly happened, so could you take me back to maybe the night before? >> Okay. Well, the guy that I went to this party with, he is the fraternity president. . . >> Okay. >> and, and I'm a freshman and of course just got started in school here this semester and, and I just joined the sorority. >> Um hum. >> And, and I've seen him several times and just thought he was just so cute. >> Okay. >> And, and then he asked me to come to this party with him and, and I went and I told my parents I was in the library studying. >> Um hum. >> but I told my best friend that I was goin' to the party with this guy and she's like do you think that's the best idea. But I mean I really wanted to go, he's so cute. >> Um hum. >> And then, and then I just went to the party and I remember he brought me a drink and I was like dancing with some people, and then the next thing I remember was waking up in a bed, and I don't know what happened. I have no clue. >> Okay so, you're you're a freshman and you met this guy, he's the president of a fraternity. . . >> Um hum. >> and you've just joined a sorority. You guys went out on a date, well actually went to a party. >> Um hum. >> He brought you a drink and after that you really, you're not sure what happened but you woke up this morning in the frat house. >> Um hum. >> Okay. Did you, did you have any other drinks besides that one? >> I don't remember any other drinks. I just remember, the last thing I remember was just I had this drink and it was a really good drink. . . >> Um hum. >> from what I remember, and then I was just dancing with some of the girls there that were in my sorority. . . >> Um hum. >> and, and that's all I remember. That's the only thing I remember about the night and I just, I keep tryin' to go back and back and back and remember something, just trying to remember something. I can't remember anything but that and then waking up and my clothes were in the floor. >> Okay. I can, I can see that you're getting a little upset and a little, I guess exasperated about not bein' able to remember but it's okay if you can't remember. What you do remember is very important. Can you tell me the guy's name that you were with? >> It was Eric. >> Eric? Do you know Eric's last name? >> Huh uh. >> Okay but you could identify Eric if you saw him again? >> Um hum I could, I could ask one of my friends his last name. They would know. >> Okay so the first thing that we're gonna do Sarah is we're gonna get a rape kit performed on you now. It's a pelvic examination. It's going to be difficult but it's something that's necessary to find out, you know, exactly what did happen. Okay and after the rape kit you'll be tested for STD's, HIV and a pregnancy test. >> You mean I could like have a disease or be pregnant? >> If if something sexual did happen, it is a possibility that that could happen. >> Oh my gosh. My parents, oh my gosh they're gonna, they're gonna be so mad at me. >> Yeah, I understand. I understand that your parents might be upset and that you're upset, but this is, these are all necessary things that have to happen in order for us to find out what exactly did happen and to make sure that you're okay, you know? You've talked about your parents. >> Um hum. >> And your parents, are they in your life? They're pretty prominent in your life? >> Um hum. >> Okay. Do you think it's any way that we could talk to your parents? >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> I mean they would want to know but, I told them I was studying. >> Yeah, yeah. >> They're just gonna be so disappointed with me. My mom's gonna be like, Sarah I am just so disappointed in you, and I don't like for my parents to be disappointed in me. >> Yeah I I know. I I wouldn't want my parents to be disappointed in me, and I know you're a freshman and this is a, a time where you're becoming a woman and you know you're learning responsibilities but it's pretty much necessary that we let them know so that that could be a support for you while you go through, go through this experience. They're someone that we'll need to notify. Okay? >> Okay. >> Okay, do you have any questions about the examination or? >> Is it gonna hurt? >> It will be difficult, it won't be easy. There may be some pain, but there will be support staff in the examination room with you. You won't be in there by the doctor, you you know you won't be in there alone with the doctor, there'll be support people in there. You can also talk to me afterwards and hopefully once we notify your parents, they'll be there with you also. So there there will be people there, you know, to help you through the situation. >> I can't believe this. >> So you, you're still feeling like this is all kinda like surreal? >> Um hum. >> Like it's a dream? >> Yeah I feel like I'm just gonna wake up and this is all gonna be over. I want it to all be over. I don't want this to be happening right now. >> I understand. I know it's very difficult. A very difficult time. [ Pause ] >> So you're gonna be here with me through everything? >> Through the entire process, I will be here. What what do you think about calling your parents now to talk with them? 'Cause I think we need to get them in as soon as possible. >> Yeah we can do that. >> We can do that now and they can be another, another support system for you besides me and you can have backup and extra backup and extra backup. >> Um hum. >> Okay? >> We probably wouldn't even need to press charges when my dad finds out. >> What do you mean by that Sarah? >> My dad has a big gun cabinet. >> So you're thinking your dad might be that upset? >> I don't know. >> [Inaudible] >> I mean I know he'll be upset. >> Yeah, I know he will too but the best way for us to handle this is not to you know, do revenge justice or go out with guns. The best way for us to handle this is what you're doin' now by comin' in and talkin' to me, by getting the test done and by notifying the police and letting them do an investigation and letting the justice system handle it. That's the best way to handle it so that your dad's not hurt, that you're not hurt anymore, and that Eric gets prosecuted. Okay?
