Personal Conflict
Management Style
I use a combination of collaboration and
avoidance when dealing with conflict in a group.
Collaboration – I will work to try to find a
solution that works for everyone
Avoidance – If the conflict becomes too
intense, I will pull away and avoid any
additional disagreements

Conflict
Management
Styles
Collaborative
Parties look for a mutually beneficial solution to their problems in an effort to end their disagreement (Weinclaw, 2021)
Cooperativeness and assertiveness are both highly correlated with collaborative solutions (Weinclaw, 2021)
When interests are not completely at odds with one another and when there is enough trust and openness for information sharing, collaboration is the preferable way for handling conflicts (Weinclaw, 2021)
Avoidant
Strategy with low levels of cooperativeness and assertiveness (Weinclaw, 2021)
Should be used for handling conflicts in which the parties try to work out their differences by reducing or avoiding potential flashpoints for confrontation (Weinclaw, 2021)
Not a practical long-term solution to the conflict but may be helpful in the short term to diffuse heated arguments or in circumstances where an insignificant issue is driving the conflict (Weinclaw, 2021)
Example of Using Collaborative and Avoidant Conflict Management Styles I was working on a large purchase request for my office. My supervisor
and I had many conversations with our finance department, trying to work through the process to ensure we were able to purchase the product needed and that the finance department had all the necessary documents they needed. (collaborative conflict management style)
The finance department was being very difficult and was not trying to work with us to make the purchase happen. Their answers were always no. I felt myself beginning to get very frustrated, so I decided to walk away from the situation for a while and then come back once I had calmed down. (avoidant conflict management style)
I found another way to approach the purchase request with the finance department, and we were able to work together to get the purchase made while also ensuring that everything was done according to the guidelines. (collaborative conflict management style)
