SAP 2000 INFLUENCE LINES TUTORIAL Construct the Influence line for the Vertical Reaction at A for the given beam
Step 1: Define Dimensions (bottom right), set to Kip, ft, F.
Step 2: File New Model Grid Only.
2
Step 3: In Quick Grid Lines menu input the following:
Number of Gridlines: X = 2, Y = 1, Z =1. Grid Spacing: X = 10, Y = 1, Z =1. We are working in XZ coordinate system; therefore, any value except for zero can be put it the Y direction.
Step 4: Close the 3D View window on the right and select XZ view at the interface menu. You can also select the XZ View by going to View Set 2D View X-Z Plane.
Step 5: Drawing Frame Elements: Draw Draw Frame/ Cable/ Tendon, or select the Frame/ Cable/ Tendon button on the left side of the menu interface to start drawing the beam. Once finished drawing the frame elements, hit Esc button or click on the Set Select Mode button located on the top left of the interface menu.
Step 6: Define Structural Supports: Left click on the left support select: Assign Joint Restraints, Pinned Do the same for the right support this time select Roller

Step 7: Define Materials Properties: From the menu select Define Materials. Highlight A992Fy50 material and click Modify/Show Material. Under Weight and Mass input Weight per Unit Volume = 0.
Step 8: Define Sections: Define Section Properties Frame Sections.
Here we can Import New Properties or Modify Section Properties like changing Section Name to Beam.
4
Step 9: Assigning Frame Section: Select all members by windowing and from the menu interface choose Assign Frame Frame Section BEAM.
Step 10: Apply Loads: In this case, there are no loads, so this step may be skipped
5
Step 11: Define Path: From the menu choose: Define-->Moving Loads-->Paths-->Add New Path Defined From Frames-->Select the path, click Add then okay
Step 12: Define Vehicles: Choose Define-->Moving Loads--> Vehicles-->Add new Vehicle-->Add
6
Step 13: Define Vehicle Class: Define-->Moving Load-->Vehicle Classes
Step 14: Assign Vehicle Path: Select the beam. Assign-->Frame-->Path Step 15: Assign Load Case: Define-->Load Cases-->Select Load Case Type to Moving Load-->Add VEH1 and in the next window delete the DEAD AND MODAL cases
7
Step 16: Set Analysis Options: Analyze--> Set Analysis Options-->XZ Plane
Step 17: Run Analysis: Analyze-->Run Now
8
Step 18: Display Influence lines: Display-->Show Influence Lines. Proceed to select the joint for which you'd like to analyze and then click okay.
Influence line for Ay
9
Step 19: View Influence Line Values: Display--> Show Influence Lines-->Show table. From there you can copy entire table and upload to a spreadsheet if necessary
