The Greek play Oedipus King presents certain human difficulties. In his early attempts to identify and to dogmatize human behaviors, Sigmund Freud utilized some literary works, including Oedipus. In fact, he defined a childhood growth phase as an oedipal phase, including a psycho-sexual interpretation. This interpretation is known as the oedipal complex or the Oedipus complex.

Some psychologists adhere to this Freudian principle, others do not, and some fluctuate somewhere in the middle. Certainly, the story component of the play intrigues, even after these many centuries since its composition.

Joachim I. Krueger is Professor of Psychology at Brown University. His article in Psychology Today, “King Oedipus and the Good Life: Understanding is Not a Matter of Judgment,” presents a slightly different take on both the play and on Freud’s use of its themes.

Read Dr. Krueger’s essay. You can find it here:  https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/one-among-many/201609/king-oedipus-and-the-good-life

Read the article once through. Read it a second time, highlighting its thesis, Dr. Krueger’s main claims, and any idea or point you find interesting.

Once you have a grasp of the contents, write a 5 page critique of the ideas. Research at least two of his points, and present a fully developed argument for your agreement or for your disagreement of both. Each argument must be clearly presented with sufficient references to support your conclusions.
