Explain what it means to be ethical as it relates to personal, academic, and professional growth.
Ethics is a term that refers to ones’ morals and character. Being ethical is justifying your actions between right and wrong and good and bad.
Personal: one’s own ethical definition of social norms pertaining to acceptable right and wrong behaviors.
Academic: Acting ethical academically means refraining from plagiarism, cheating and remaining honest.
Professional Growth: acts of being ethical may often vary depending on the profession. Commonly for professional growth, act with integrity, delivering high standards of service, responsibility of actions and remaining respectful.
Provide at least one ethical dilemma you have encountered and describe how the issue was resolved.
Another part of my job is overseeing our public works crew. This is a group of guys who maintain the public of our community. Within this group, the guys jokingly pick on each other for various things that occur throughout the work day. One of the guys did not appreciate certain comments and brought them to my attention. I had a discussion with the upset employee and heard his complaints about the situation. Later that work day, I pulled the other employees in who were causing the issues and talked about their behavior. I explained that it was inappropriate behavior and we do not tolerate any form of harassment. It was considered a verbal warning and if it did not end, further disciplinary action will take place.
Describe how your general education courses have influenced your ethical values.
From all the various courses I was required to take, they all contributed to my understanding of ethical values. Being required to take general education courses makes us well rounded individuals to enter the workforce. It opens our mind to understanding all different cultures, diversities, religions, ethical values and applying them to the real world. Being able to understand how to become ethical allows us to act unbiased.
Explain why a college-educated person might have different duties to society than someone not as educated.
A college educated person is expected to use their knowledge to do good and not harm. They were subjected to many resources that a non-college educated person may not have access too. By law they are seen to have a knowledge pertaining to ethical duties of society and becoming a well versed global citizen. When it comes to duties of society for example, a medical professional; nurse, doctor etc. is mandated to report any signs or incidents of any form of abuse on duty AND off duty by law.
