Introduction
The name of the selected Case study that I chose is “Understanding normal development of adolescent sexuality: A bumpy ride”. “Adolescent Sexuality”, Adolescence is derived from adolescere which is a Latin word. The meaning of this word is to grow up. It is a significant developmental phase. Throughout adolescence, important biological and subjective developments take place. Sexuality Development is an essential bio-psycho-social development that takes a grown-up shape throughout this stage. During adolescence, an individual’s thoughts, perception, and response get embellished sexually. The myriad of changes that happens in teenagers puts them under immense stress that may have unfavorable physical and psychological outcomes. Understanding youth sexuality has significant clinical, right, material, social, and educational relationships (Cohen, 2016).
Main Body
Growth, as well as development, is made up of endless processes that bring a variation in an individual in every moment. The growth of sexuality begins as early as in intrauterine life following interpretation as well as proceeds through infancy, adolescence, youth, and adulthood till death. There is no gender awareness during infancy. The child recognizes its gender in early childhood as early as three years. Self-awareness related to sexuality like gender role and gender individuality grows during childhood. Youth can be broadly separated into 3 stages. Those are Early-stage that is 10 to 13 years, middle-stage is 14 to 16 years, and last-stage is 17 to 19 years. Physical variances start in early teens, where they are very focused on their body image. In many countries, youngsters are also constrained to early marriage that results in adolescent pregnancy as well as adolescent fatherhood. In most cases females in connection to males are constrained to early marriage. Early exposure to a passionate relationship also enhances the risk of sexually spread viruses in the body. As per the 2014 investigation statistics, published by United States Census Bureau, teenagers from 10 to 19 years of age count roughly 1.2 billion in the World. Almost, 70 percent of the total adolescent from 10 to 19 years of population age across the Globe resides in developing nations.
Sexuality Development in an Adolescent
During youth, physical development, psychological and cognitive development attains its peak. Teenage sexuality development can be better described with the bio-psycho-social paradigm. Biological factors, psychological factors, and social factors have similar consequences in determining, the growth of sexuality in teenagers. In both males as well as females-pubic hairs, axillary hairs develop that takes a gender-related growth model. In males, there happens enlargement of genitals, the appearance of the beard as well as mustache, and the power takes a typical male shape. In females it is the development of breast; discharge starts, genitalia that take an adult state as well as the physique variations to a female type. An adolescent's attention in a sexual relationship is also controlled by hormones. Social circumstances or environmental facts also act a vital role in adolescent sexuality development. The nature of the parents toward sexuality, parenting style, peer relationship, cultural attractions are the significant social factors that promote sexual learning as well as determines the sexual attitude of the teenager.
Gender and Adolescence
Adolescence changes vary in both the genitals. On average females experience these changes 12 to 18 months earlier than guys. Moreover, the time of attaining development can impact adolescent growth adversely. As per investigation in the U.S. during childhood-boys as opposed to girls are more suitable to face negative health consequences like aggressive behavior as well as depression. While during adolescence, the girls are more suitable to face a higher risk of negative health outcomes. The effect of discrimination, gender, poverty, and degradation makes teenage girls more defenseless to adverse consequences (Segal, 2018).
Adolescent Sexual Behavior
Numerous researchers have investigated on western population concerning sexual behavior decorations of adolescents as well as investigated the potential factors connecting to the sexual practices. In this research, they studied more than eleven thousand adolescents from 18 to 27 years of age. They have found that more than 90 percent lose their maidenhood before marriage. The virgin people are found to be younger, have poor environmental maturity, greater body mass index, more spiritual inclination, and frequently had observed disapproval for sex throughout adolescence by progenitors. By the late teens as well as the early '20s, most individuals undergo oral or vaginal sex irrespective of nuptial status as found in dissimilar studies from the United States. It was seen that initial exposure to vaginal sex during puberty raised the risk of sexually transmitted disease; however, the risk steadily declines with age. It was also stated that those who were presented early to vaginal sex found to have the number of sexual companions that might have a link with the enhanced risk of sexually transferred ailments.
Challenges Faced
Teenagers face great difficulty in their early years. Numerous critical biological and psychological shifts occur during this period for which various adolescents are not fit enough to cope with, which frequently puts them under pressure. This entails psychological variations frequently perceived as challenges. Difficulties associated with sexual strategies as well as encounters are not the only challenge in minority. Interpersonal violence is one of the important concerns in youngsters. It may occur in physical and sexual abuse. Most of the interpersonal violence is associated with sexuality. Normally, the adolescents are not prepared enough in the parenting skills because of which teenage pregnancy, as well as adolescent parenthood, become a challenge (Kar, Choudhury, & Singh, 2015).
Conclusion
Understanding the adolescent's sexuality development is extremely important so that this transition period in life can be supported properly by parents. Understanding the determinants influencing sexuality is also beneficial for intervention and ensuring that we can help younger generations from taking the wrong paths and developing mental issues from negative sexual experiences.
