Around Garfield Park

Garfield Park is a West Side Chicago community where a Chicago Public Park that comprises 20% of this collective area.

People in the neighborhood typically hang out in the streets and outdoors by the parks

Where to Eat

Generally small family owned restaurants. Not too common to have sit down places in the area.

Comfort food like southern-style chicken, barbecue, and Jamaican-inspired jerk, and typical American classic fast food like cheeseburgers and hot dogs. A very popular place is The Original Maxwell Street.

z

Garfield Park Conservatory is a massive greenhouse with beautiful plants perfect for nature-lovers looking to escape from the busy city.

The Conservatory is a great place to take a solo walk and clear your mind or bring along the whole family to participate in one of the kid's exhibits and special events.

z

The Conservatory has a wide variety of programming for the public:

Educational experiences for all guests

Field Trips for students

The 10 acres of outdoor gardens include the City Garden, Demonstration Garden, Play & Grow Garden, Artist’s Garden and Sensory Garden.

The Urban Roots Teen Docent program works with students from Al Raby High School.

The summer internship is an intensive, experiential training in botany and learn about the Conservatory, from the history to the plants.

This program supports the professional and personal development of participating teens, while also providing links and support for students’ academic work during the school year.

                            Safety

Police presence was very poor, after spending 40 minutes in the Garfield Park neighborhood a police officer was finally spotted at the park where there was a baseball game taking place. The only police presence was a on duty police officer watching the game next to his friends or family members away from the crowd.

z

Gang and Drug Activity

The Garfield Park community did not feel safe and during the survey

Three active drug deals taking place in the open areas of the community and even behind the Oak Street Health Center.

z

11

There was a few memorial spots by the park showing that violence has taken place in the area where children play.

In the park, there was a group of homeless people living under the trees.

z

Abandoned Houses

Several buildings were in bad shape, abandoned, or burned down. In the community most homes and businesses were boarded up.

z

Media

Newspapers and media ads were hard to find as most stores were closed and boarded up. The only advertisement flyers that were noticeable were advertisements of cash for homes.  Garfield Park does not have its own newspaper or cable network. All residents in the neighborhood appeared to be African American so there does not appear to be any bilingual needs. Most houses did not have any antennas and in big apartment buildings there only appeared to be one satellite dish for all the apartments in the building showing that many residents do not have cable.

z

Stores and Service Centers

The restaurants and food stores available in the community were all unhealthy food choices that consisted of fatty foods.

There were no whole foods or big chain grocery store meaning that grocery shopping could only be done in small stores where the prices were more likely to be higher than they would be in a bigger chain food store.

Fitness centers were non-existent in the community and there were no recreational activity centers which increases the risk of chronic health issues in the African American community.

z

z

Schools

Describe the educational system for the community including public, private, and alternative schools.

Supportive evidence is helpful for the community nurse to make assessments about the community.

Remember schools range from pre-schools to colleges and universities. Supportive data may include:

How many schools are in the area and which level of student to they serve?

How many private school options are there in this community? What types of private institutions are represented (religious affiliation, Montessori, academic driven)?

What are the public schools rating/ranking?

What is the high school graduation rate? How does it compare to the state or national averages?
