Competency 2: Advance Human Rights and Social, Racial, Economic, and Environmental Justice

Social work is a diverse occupation that serves clients from different societal strata. Competency 2 provides that the social worker must ensure they have no reservations for a particular group of people within the social stratifications. Often, social stratification, including ethnicity, racial, and economic disparity, creates an inferiority complex that makes the clients feel that others are favored. Thus, social workers are responsible for ensuring that equity and inclusivity are achieved in service provision. Social workers should be open-minded and ready to embrace different types of personalities during engagements. Sometimes, the social work duty involves addressing clients wo have gone through depression due to discrimination in their line of services and operations. For example, African Americans in the United States feel they are not accorded equal opportunity, chances, or representation, even when the federal government and legislatures are working hard to resolve the issue. The problem reflects the general perception of discrimination along various stratifications, including age, gender, color, and class. Thus, the competency process should reflect an awareness of social and environmental stratification and ensure that social workers administer their services fairly to every person.

Literature Review Paper: SOW 3403

The literature review assignment from SOW 3403 was significant in illustrating how to identify the social issues and human rights prevalence in society and how to address them strategically. The assignment focuses on the impacts of alcohol or drug abuse and the mitigation strategies social workers must carry out to ensure the challenge is addressed. According to the author, alcoholism has been a societal challenge, especially in term of social well-being and public health. The literature proposes the need for social strategies towards mitigating alcoholism and the use of illegal drugs to be concentrated in thematic areas with a prevalence of the challenge rather than distributing the programs to areas with a minor impact on the social challenge. It is significant to conduct research in specific areas before venturing to ensure that we, as social workers in the program, have a vast knowledge of the existing challenges and the issues that cause the rise of drug and substance abuse. Therefore, all clients within the social work framework are equal and deserve non-discriminatory attention and the provision of services.

The assignment was significant in understanding the various strategies in the program, including the significant role social workers play in mitigating these impacts by addressing the underlying causes. As social workers, we strive to protect and promote human rights by advocating for individuals affected by substance abuse and ensuring their access to healthcare, housing, education, and employment opportunities. For example, at one point, I had to assist one of my clients with access to a medical card to facilitate his accessing medical services that would help him get treatment for his condition. The experience allowed me to witness the disparity in public service provision in high-discrimination areas. Further, the assignment addresses the impact of vice on teens, where they are exposed to the consequences of drug and substance abuse, including teen pregnancies, suicide, addiction, and the development of alcohol use disorder. This impacts the future generation's academic performance, social engagement, poverty rates, excess usage, and increased violence among teens. I was able to learn that social workers should ensure that services are provided regardless of nationality, race, or even class to provide a relative platform for all. The alcoholism aspect significantly impacts human rights and social, racial, economic, and environmental justice and needs to be addressed through effective social work strategies.

Competency 3: Engage Anti-Racism, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ADEI) In Practice

As Social workers we must understand historical and systemic foundations of racism, discrimination, and marginalization. Social workers are strategically placed to facilitate, participate and engage in anti-racism, promotion of diversity and equity, and inclusion into practices. The NASW Code of Ethics provides that social workers should conduct their activities without biases and discrimination. It encourages social workers to use evidence-based mechanisms to ensure we have a reason to act. Thus, it prevents us from making individual decisions and actions. Social workers have direct contact with the public and are mandated to ensure we are at the forefront of the push for cultural competence and humility. Social workers understand the impacts of discrimination and oppression because of an individual skin color, ethnic group, or class. Thus, we are supposed to lead the campaign against these vices by acting as examples.

There are several ways where social workers can promote equity and inclusion at their place of work. For example, Some simple activities, including adherence to queues while receiving services and serving the clients by putting personal opinions aside and receiving our clients with an open mind to ensure no discrimination. Social worker may be compelled to utilize the ethical principles of empathy to allow the prioritization of clients when their conditions are emergencies, involves the need to save lives, and other urgent factors that should be captured in the process. However, it does not mean the emergency loophole should not be used to provide services to people without merit. Further, social workers can engage in anti-racism practice by using evidence-based mechanisms where the client's needs and demands are addressed according to evidence obtained regarding their condition.

Individual Written Assignment Agency Study SOW 3113

The analysis of the Individual Written Assignment Agency Study from SOW 3113 significantly expressed my comprehensiveness of the thematic competency area of anti-racism, diversity, equity, and inclusion as an area of focus in social work. The assignment's purpose was to conduct a case study of an agency through research, establish its roles in the community, and show how it has helped the populace that stays within the environment. The issues identified in the research involved intervening for minority and discriminated-against groups in society to enjoy the inclusion and equity provisions. Minority and discriminated members of the community include people of color, women and children, low-income earners, and persons from ethnic groups with low representation. The research showed that this class of people would likely suffer from lack of inclusion, recognition, or a fair share of resource and service distribution in society. Thus, they need the intervention of concerned parties like social workers to ensure they feel part of society and the community around them. The most established entities that the research found to be involved in supporting the specific groups included churches and charity organizations.

I learned from the research on various issues how to help the vulnerable in society through my competency and professionalism. For example, women and children were supported by providing food and shelter. Women and children are vulnerable because society does not consider them for opportunities compared to men and adults, respectively. Thus, they are likely to suffer in silence without the knowledge of the government or other community members. I was impressed by how the religious and charitable organizations categorized as non-profit extend their services to advocating and engaging on anti-racial issues, equity, and the push for inclusion of every member of the community in the benefits enjoyed by society. The church and the non-profit organization provide services to everyone without considering their ethnic group, religion, race, or class. For example, my experience at Neighborhood Help ensures that equity and inclusion are achieved when distributing relief to families in households affected by disaster. During these moments, every client receives assistance equally, without consideration of where or who they are in society. Social workers actively promote anti-racism, diversity, equity, and inclusion. This entails staying informed about these issues, employing anti-racist and anti-oppressive practices, and engaging in continual self-reflection, self-awareness, and self-regulation. Also, the research gave me a glimpse of the causes of the challenges experienced by the minority and the disadvantages in the community. Some challenges result from past experiences and alienation from a specific social stratification; hence, discrimination is not worth it. As social workers, we must stand up and advocate for the rights of the vulnerable in society. Therefore, the research convinced me that society is considering my services in engaging in anti-racism and the struggle towards ensuring that diversity, equity, and inclusion are achieved.

Competency 7: Assess Individuals, Families, Groups, Organizations, and Communities

After analyzing competency 7, the learning product allowed me to demonstrate how interactions with clients and constituencies benefit various communities. We employ our knowledge of theories such as human behavior and person-in-environment, utilizing a collaborative process to conduct culturally sensitive assessments and develop mutually agreeable plans. Social workers actively engage with other professionals from different disciplines, acknowledging that their expertise can provide valuable insights to enhance our client assessments. The process at Competency 7 involves the need to understand and obtain more information regarding the family, groups, organization, and community. The assessment process is fundamental to ensuring the client's situation, process, and progress. We acknowledge the potential influence of our own perspectives and biases on our decision-making and judgment. Therefore, we actively engage in self-reflection when working with our clients. The assessment process is specific because it follow up on a specific issue with the client. Competency 7 involves the study of the client's environment and the interpersonal skills and behaviors that guide the development of the actions to be taken. Thus, social workers must engage other professionals with expertise in specific fields. Therefore, the process should be candid and elaborate to provide the framework for intervention.

Individual & Family Assessment SOW 3313

I chose the assignment from SOW 3313 Individual and Family Assessment to illustrate my comprehensive understanding of competency 7 on the assessment. This assignment provided an opportunity for me to select a character from a movie and conduct an assessment, allowing me to develop my assessment skills as a social worker. The movie focused on a 25-year-old African American male who was referred for counseling assessment due to his antisocial behavior, which hindered his ability to establish positive relationships with colleagues. During the assessment, it became evident that cognitive behavioral therapy would be beneficial for this individual, as it could help him acquire effective coping skills, improve his functioning in society, and overcome negative thoughts.

Engaging in this assignment allowed me to practice assessment techniques and recommend appropriate actions and treatments based on the client's needs. Moreover, this assignment emphasized the importance of conducting a thorough assessment before drawing any conclusions about the underlying issues faced by individuals from different social groups. It highlighted the ethical aspect of avoiding premature judgments and reinforced the need for a clinical approach in the assessment process. By adhering to this principle, I ensured that the information obtained during the assessment accurately reflected the client's true conditions. Overall, I believe this assignment helped me reach this competency because it provided valuable learning experiences and enhanced my assessment skills, ultimately contributing to my growth as a social worker.
