Help with Prep- Assignment Outline:

A recommendation to find at least 2 references/sources you plan to use for your paper to help you develop your outline. Now that you’ve gotten your preliminary research done you are ready to develop an outline for your writing assignment.

Also, develop your thesis. A thesis statement focuses your ideas into one or two sentences. In other words, the main topic of your paper is briefly summarized in 2-3 sentences- remember when developing your thesis, what do you want to prove or disprove in your paper based upon your hypothesis? It should present the topic of your paper and also make a comment about your position in relation to the topic. Your thesis statement should tell your reader what the paper is about and also help guide your writing about the topic.

Outlines help you to organize your ideas as well help you see how to relate your overall thesis or central idea to your paper.

The general format for a Formal Outline looks something like this:

1. Thesis: Topic Sentence (main point)

1. Supporting evidence

1. Supporting evidence

1. Topic Sentence (main point)

1. Supporting evidence

1. Supporting evidence

Etc.

You can add more topic sentences and supporting evidence areas as needed- please use the specific instructions for the outline that are in the Assignment Area.

Listed below is a sample outline that can be used as a guide in developing your outline assignment. Remember to choose your topic first based upon the list in your syllabus, develop your thesis, find your references (academic sources), utilize out text for sociological concepts and definitions to get you started.

SAMPLE OUTLINE:

Applying the Sociological Perspective: An Analysis of Gender Inequality and Unequal Pay

I. I chose to do my paper on Gender Inequality and Unequal Pay. I will discuss why gender inequality and unequal pay are issues that have not been resolved. Some of the reasons for the lack, and stagnation of progress that will be discussed are:

A. Gender identity

B. Gender roles

C. Sexism

D. Separate Spheres Ideology (SSI)

II. Current events related to strategies for combating gender inequality include employer voluntary cooperation as explained in an article from Forbes, titled Two Solutions For The Gender Pay Gap That Can Be Implemented Today. Another example of ongoing efforts are enforcement of current policies, and legislation as in the current class action suit brought by the National Women’s Law Center against Walmart. Finally, new legislation such as the Workplace Advancement Act (WAA), and Gender Advancement in Pay Act (GAP) proved that new strategies are being proposed.

III. Sociological concepts that will be discussed are gender stratification, intersection theory, feminism, and gender stereotypes.

A. Gender Stereotypes are organized consensual beliefs and opinions about the characteristics of women and men.

B. Gender Stratification can be viewed as structural sexism, occupational sex segregation, and or cultural sexism.

C. Intersection Theory is the analysis of the interplay of race, class, and gender often resulting in multiple dimensions of disadvantage.

D. Feminism supports social equality for women and men in opposition to patriarchy and sexism.

IV. Sociological theories that will be discussed are structural-functional, and social-conflict.

A. Structural-Functional approach suggests that society is a complex system of many separate, but interrelated parts that work together.

B. Social-Conflict approach suggests that men and women are at odds over power.

V. The organization I chose to include in my paper is the American Association of University Women.

VII. Other Required Information: Gender inequality and unequal pay is viewed by many as an issue, that at the present rate, will not be resolved until the year 2058 (Hegewisch, Williams, Harmann, Hudiburg. Income Inequality). There are varying opinions and research as to why this issue remain. Gender identity, and gender roles have led the population at large to gender stereotyping. Research proves that women have surpassed men in college degree attainment, occupational segregation has decreased, marital and maternal status are no longer limiting factors, and the income gap has been continuously closing since the sixties (Mandel; Semyonov Gender Pay Gap and Employment Sector: Sources of Earnings Disparities in the United States). There are existing opinions which present the argument that “women freely choose to prioritize family over work” (Miller; Borgida. The Separate Spheres Model of Gendered Inequality). Feminism itself contains self-conflicting opinions. Liberal feminism is rooted in the belief that an individual should advance based on personal ability and effort. However, radical feminism reaches far beyond liberal and socialist feminism and believes that gender itself must be eliminated. The question of how we equitably eliminated gender stratification without being ethnocentric remains a struggle.
