SIT & SLEEP 2
Systems Analysis and Redesign Project-Phase 2-Sit & Sleep
In this new updated enterprise resource planning (ERP) system and the second part of this
project, it will explain the current redesigning that needs to be addressed. It will show some of
the problems and opportunities that may arise when the updated ERP system is being redesigned.
Sit & Sleeps Information Technology (IT) personnel is hoping to achieve positive results without
having that many technical issues in redesigning this updated ERP system including any
implementations which are also necessary to be executed by software developers during its
current business process. Buying and creating new computer software may also critical in this
project in the long term.
Current Business Process
In this current business process it is meant to provide excellent customer service to the
public who are interested in buying the best quality mattresses in Southern California that exist.
IT managers and system analyst have decided to redesign this new information system including
the company’s updated ERP system so their functionalities can work more efficiently on a
permanent basis. New implementations must also be executed to the system so its usability
requirements can be tested in capacity and speed for its hardware determinants. Software
determinants in their applications and compatibility will be evaluated once the system has been
integrated with new hardware configurations. The opportunities in redesigning this new ERP
system are endless in its emerging technologies. It will provide Sit & Sleep’s website more
options for customers who make purchases online by providing them live chats with business
managers if they have any questions and concerns relating to their mattresses. In addition, it will
give customers the benefit to choose or create their own colorful mattresses online by using Sit &
Sleeps drawing tool on their website before they decide to make a purchase.
SIT & SLEEP 3
The cost of training and hiring skilled IT personnel is very important for this project so it
can prevent any failures during the redesigning process. Even after when the implementations are
executed the IT staff must be knowledgeable in using the new information system or otherwise it
will backfire causing functional inefficiencies as a negative result. New computer software like
enterprise solutions through Oracle has been purchased in developing this proposed system to
ensure software capabilities will work to their optimal level. “Lack of proper analysis of
requirements will lead to non-availability of certain essential functionalities. These are certain
generic challenges while implementing ERP solutions. Depending on the sector in which the
company operates in, the extent of complications may vary” (Ramco, 2016, para. 8). So, it is
extremely important to hire, an experienced team of consultants in this case.
Investing in its IT infrastructure is very critical during the redesigning of this system.
ERP applications and their modules must possess good processing speed and enough storage so
it can avoid any technical issues in the long run. Other types of risk involved in redesigning the
system are changes in information technology in a lack of proper controls for Sit & Sleeps IT
department. ERP system implementations causes many changes in an organization so Sit &
Sleep’s IT personnel must be prepared and aware of this situation when it occurs. Additionally,
more opportunities will keep arising once its redesigning of the system is completed. It will be
capable of supporting Sit & Sleep’s operational processes with ease and this includes eliminating
any usability issues the ERP system may have some time in the near future. The quantifiable
results in redesigning this system are improving Sit & Sleep’s competitive position and to resolve
any customer support issues through its advanced software management systems.
Attracting more customers online through the use of Facebook and Twitter is also another
business strategy Sit & Sleep will need to consider in staying competitive against other furniture
SIT & SLEEP 4
businesses like Levitz and Macy’s. Success needs to be measured for everyone who works for Sit
& Sleep and has put lots of work and dedication to the company. For the system to be successful
only skilled and dedicated IT professionals will be hired for the job. Challenges in ERP solutions
will always exist for Sit & Sleep when it comes to redesigning and implementing its software
applications. If the cost is too high then project managers may delay the systems redesigning and
implementations to a certain point because of lack of support. Senior management has to agree
on redesigning the project or otherwise it will lead to issues and frustrations at Sit & Sleep.
Observing users who use the system will play a big role when data is being processed so IT
personnel can make sure it is working efficiently. Once the system is tested and evaluated as long
as it provides positive results the redesigning and implementations will be considered to be a
success. Everything cannot be implemented all at once in this new updated ERP system or it will
lead to lots of confusion.
Hardware Determinants
Redesigning and implementing this system will require some time and patience from Sit
& Sleep’s IT personnel in order for the project to be successful. A large part of this ERP system
will be running through business SAP applications and updates. Cloud computing and Google
docs will be more efficient than before once the redesigning of the system is complete its
processing power. Web technologies will help IT managers at Sit & Sleep determine the best
solution when they are making decisions based on effective hardware and infrastructure options
for this ERP system relating to its capacity. Its speed will be much faster than before ranging in
the systems random access memory (RAM) on 64-bit processors ranging from 140 MB to 300
MB running on a standard operating system which is Windows 10.
SIT & SLEEP 5
The computing power of this new system will be more efficient in its use when computer
programmers implement more random access memory to its applications. It will increase the
system’s speed and durability by 56 percent. “In the evolution of improved project management
solutions many software programs were produced and made available to project managers.
Recently, as many as fifty project management software packages were offered for sale to
companies or individuals” (McCollum, 2015, p. 243). The amount of cache memory in the
system has a big impact on the computers speed. An updated hard drive will be installed on the
new ERP system so it can save larger amounts of data compared to the older version. Older
versions Windows 7 and 8 were also previously used in the system but when Windows 10 was
installed it did cause some issues in its enterprise applications.
Microsoft’s IT professionals were the ones who advised Sit & Sleep’s project managers in
upgrading their ERP systems to a new and advanced software application that will run more
efficiently through Windows 10. For some reason Windows 10 has given many organizations
including Sit & Sleep technical issues when using older versions of an ERP system. Information
technology suggests that a brand new and improved ERP system will be running more efficiently
through Windows 10. The issue was fixed once Windows 10 was installed along with an updated
ERP system and its implementations. Redesigning the system was very critical up to this point to
ensure this ERP system can hold up to at least 4 GB of RAM. Computer hardware components
were already included in the system through its computer technology itself which includes a
wireless mouse, monitor, and special touch screen devices. When a CD-ROM is used to transfer
data from another PC it will run through the EPR system about 160 kilobytes per second. IT and
software capabilities in its latest terms will help identify Sit & Sleep’s current business needs
through this advanced ERP system in satisfying their online customers.
SIT & SLEEP 6
Software Determinants
Project managers felt that using a PC instead of a Macintosh (MAC) would be the best
option for having an effective ERP solution run efficiently and reduces cost for Sit & Sleep. Intel
processors and Pentium III operate on the system around 733MHz. Sit & Sleeps entire IT
department uses the best brands in computer technology like Toshiba, Samsung, and Hewlett-
Packard (HP). Ranging from desktop PC’s, tablets, and laptop computers ownership at Sit &
Sleep has invested substantial amount of money in information technology to make sure the
organization will be successful financially. They must continue to use the Internet towards Sit &
Sleeps benefit and find other ways to keep attracting their customers by developing new
marketing strategies now and in the future especially that technology will continue to grow.
“Component-based development is similar to object-oriented development in the focus is on
creating general purpose pieces of software that can be used interchangeably in many different
programs. Components can be as small as objects or as large as pieces of software that handle
single business functions, such as currency conversion” (Hoffer, George, & Valacich, 2014, p.
41).
Mobile applications have been implemented on the system through service providers like
T-Mobile and AT&T along with a stable WI-FI Internet connection so project and IT managers
can have efficient control of its compatibility in wireless communications through Sit & Sleeps
entire IT staff by using their smart phones. In addition, communication technologies would be
responding from the ERP system in testing its wireless capabilities and configurations so IT
managers can make sure everything is working properly through Microsoft Windows 10. Popular
software packages like Microsoft Excel, Access, and Project will be used on a daily basis by Sit
& Sleeps IT personnel to conduct their job duties in a timely manner. Computer programmers in
SIT & SLEEP 7
redesigning the system used programming languages like Java, C+++, and COBOL to execute
and integrate its software components. Generally, this is meant to improve process efficiencies
the ERP system encounters to retrieve certain information that the older version was not able to
do. Cleaning its memory was also necessary to make its speed run more effective on an updated
enterprise solution application. In Sit & Sleeps Supply Logistics Department, their management
information systems were also updated and redesigned so it can provide decision makers more
access to statistical, financial, and project management information. The system and its software
applications are owned by IBM to help improve Sit & Sleeps financial position and computer
technology so they can continue to be successful.
Maintenance & Upgrades
Maintenance will be executed to clean and delete any memory or viruses the system may
encounter during its use. Upgrades will continue to be installed by IT personnel in the system
itself including any newer versions of ERP solutions that may be introduced to Sit & Sleep.
Newer standard operating systems from Microsoft and Apple will be considered for the system in
the long term. Microsoft Windows 10 is the best option for this system currently and it did cause
some technical issues through its software applications. IT personnel made an excellent job in
fixing the system and its issues. Future changes in computer technology that may affect the
system will include newer upgrades from Microsoft Windows operating systems in the near
future. Alternatively, upgrading the ERP system to a newer version will always cause technical
issues as it did recently when implementations were being executed. Redesigning the system was
a long process for IT personnel to complete within its desired deadlines. In addition, system
analyst had to fix any issues the system encountered during its redesigning as it was a
complicated project for Sit & Sleep overall. “As a type of IS/IT capability at the
SIT & SLEEP 8
functional/operational level, ERP capabilities can result in creating shared and standard
applications by enabling firms to retain data integrity and manage multiple business functions”
(Karimi, J., Somers, T., & Bhattacherjee, A., 2007, p.224).
