Personal Learning Plan

Step 1: Write a response to the following four questions:

What aspect of Intercultural Communication am I interested in learning?

I am interested in the conversational etiquette of different cultural. In the society, we meet many people from many different countries. We can show our respect from the conversational etiquette. For example, making eye contact when talking is very important in some countries, such as United States. However, in China and Vietnam, making too much eye contact when you speaking to elder is not polite. I want to learn more conversational etiquette in this class.

Why is becoming an effective cultural communicator important to me? How will I personally and professionally benefit?

I am an international student from China. The cultural of United States is very different from my country. To becoming an effective cultural communicator help me can communicate better with others as well as make friends with different cultural.

Where do I envision myself at the end of this quarter in terms of application of my new skills and knowledge?

I will be more openness at the end of this quarter. I will be willing to communicate with different cultural people, and understand theirs meaning better.

How will I know if I achieved my goals? What skills will I be able to demonstrate?

If I achieved my goal, I will be more talkative than now. I will make friends with different cultural people. Also I can learn some new language, and the conversational etiquette in other countries.

Course Goal#1: I will be able to articulate ways and offer examples to explain how language determines cultural patterns of thinking and behavior.

Personal Learning goal: I want to know does language determines ones personality. Because I found that some people show different personality when they say different language. For example, some people become more confidence when they speak English.

Self-Assessment: I want to achieve this goal through ask different people with different cultural, whether they are more confidence and open when speak English.

Course Goal#2: I will be able to demonstrate awareness of the role power and privilege in the construction of marginalized social identities, including those related to race, class, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion, and ability level.

Personal Learning Goal: I want to know more about individuals from different gender. In the ancient China, gender race is very serious. But nowadays, women have the same status with men. I am curious about women’s social status in other cultural. Is the gender race relate to the development of the country.

Self-Assessment: I want to know more from my discussion group. In their country, do women have lower social status than men in the past?

Course Goal #3: I will be able to recognize and analyze the theoretical foundations of cultural values, norms, and identity.

Personal Learning Goal: I am curious about why in some countries women need to wear the head scarf. What does it mean?

Self-Assessment: I will have an interview with a classmate who wear the head scarf. And ask her about the meaning of the scarf.

Course Goal #4: I will be able to identify and interpret culturally diverse verbal and non-verbal symbols.

Personal Learning Goal: I want to learn that if one word have some different meanings. So I can know more about this language and have better communication with others.

Self-Assessment: My goal is I can know 3 words which have different meanings.

Course Goal #5: I will be able to exhibit competence in working collaboratively in groups.

Personal Learning Goal:

I will participate more in group discussion. Ask some deeper questions to get more knowledge about other cultural.

Self-Assessment: In the class, I will get better communication with classmates. I will be more helpful to others I think.

Course Goal #6: I will be able to exhibit increased self-awareness concerning my own cultural identity with respect to the cultural identities of others.

Personal Learning Goal:

I can meet with my countries’s friends regularly. I can increase my self-awareness concerning my own cultural identity during I communicate with my friends.

Self-Assessment: I can say anything to my friends, and they always can give me feedback to my questions.

Cultural Goal #7: I will be able to articulate and apply understandings of cultural diversity and multicultural competence in the situations of others as well as to their own lives.

Personal Learning Goal: What do I want to learn in response to this course goal? Why is this goal important to me?

I plan to read some book about western cultural to learn more details I never known before. I want to know the history of western cultural.

Self-Assessment: How will I know if I achieve this goal?

I will be more patient and nonjudgmental when I contact with people have different cultural. I will be a better listener to different minds of others.

Cultural Goal #8: I will able to exhibit competence interacting with simulated or real conflicts between members of multiple cultural groups.

Personal Learning Goal: What do I want to learn in response to this goal? Why is this goal important to me?

I will engage our group discussion and give my opinion. I will try to help answer some other group members’ question.

Self-Assessment: How will I know whether I achieve this goal? What will be evident or different?

I can maintain my friendship in longterm. If I have conflicts with my friends. I will try to have a conversation to solve the problem.

Course Goal #9: I will be able to effectively communicate these outcomes both verbally and in writing.

Personal Learning Goal: What do I want to learn in response to this course goal? Why is this goal so important to me?

My goal is be able to effectively communicate with people have different cultural than me. I will try to have more communication not only in the classroom.

Self-Assessment: How will I know whether I achieve this goal? What will be different or evident?

I will be willing to make friends with my group members. They are very nice and friendly. I am so glad to communicate with them and share our cultural knowledge each other. I want to maintain a good relationship after the course ends.

Step 3:

I would like to receive a 3.8 as a result of your work. In order to achieve this goal I will finish all of my assignment as well as spend more than15 hours on this course weekly. Also I will do the reading before the class, and engage the course group discussion every class. I will share my opinion with my group and give feedbacks to their speeches. I hope I can make some good friends with different cultural than me after this course.
