Smoking in KSA

Comment by steve balmer: Remember, this section includes a hook, overview of topic with thesis statement, and three to five reasons why the topic is important. You already finished this part, but you might want to revise it.

Smoking in Saudi Arabia

According to NEWS, J. A. (2013), over 5 million individuals smoke in Saudi Arabia, which accounts for about 13% of the population (Saudi MOH, 2008). Studies show that smoking is very harmful and could lead to many diseases (Jones, 2012); for instance, numerous types of cancer (mostly lung cancer), heart disease and high blood pressure, and it could lead to heart attacks. More than 4700 person die each year in Saudi Arabia due to smoking, 8% of male and 4% for female. (Tobacco Atlas, 2014) Smoking is hazardous for the health and social life of smokers; furthermore, it is very difficult to stop smoking. This research paper will explore the important issue of smoking among Saudis today, why it is important, what are some of the negative effects, and what are some of the effective strategies used to quit smoking.

(Here you write three to five reasons why the topic is important, and what contribution the paper will make.)

This paper will answer the following research questions:

Why did you start smoking?

How does smoking influence your social life?

How does smoking affect your health?

What steps have you taken to quit smoking?

Review of Literature

In this section, you write the key information related to your topic from at least five academic journals.

Methodology

This is a qualitative research project. Three subjects were interviewed to find out how the impact of smoking has in the daily life of Saudis. (You discuss in further detail here the kind of qualitative research you used, ie semi structured interviews, surveys, etc.)

Participants

Three subjects were interviewed. Their average age was 47, and they had been smoking for an average of 16 years. Two of the subjects are current smokers, while the other participant quit smoking 22 years-ago.

The first subject was Khaled (you will use a pseudonym). Khaled started to smoke at 16; He is 22 years old student at Al Dammam University majoring in Computer Science. He is a heavy smoker, smoking one pack a day.

The second subject was Abdullah. He is 37 years old; He started to smoke when he was 20. He works for Saudi Electricity Company; He worked there for almost 12 years. He smokes on average 10 to 11 cigarettes a day. He is married and has 3 kids.

The third subject was Ahmed. He is 82 years old; He used to smoke. But he quit smoking after known that it was bad for his health. When he was 60 his doctor told him that it was dangerous and warned him that it could lead to death after that he stopped smoking. He started to smoke when he was 30 years old. He is retired from Saudi Aramco he is a father to six children and the grandfather of Twenty.

Materials

Each subject answered five questions. The interviewer asked some follow up questions when needed. Please see Appendix A for a copy of the questions.

Procedures

The interview was questions and answers with some followed-up questions to learn how they start, what influences them, and what are the protective factors that made them hesitate to start smoking. The first interview was with Ahmed it was at his house and there was a discussion on the topic than the another interviewed him. The second interview was with Khaled it was at a coffee shop. The third interview was with Abdullah it took place at a restaurant.

Findings

Smoking impacts the daily life of individuals and families in different ways. Also, people commence to smoke for different reasons, while others successfully quit smoking, but other smokers are unable to quit. This section discusses the reasons why people smoke, the health impacts of smoking, the impacts on social lives, and some of the effective strategies Saudis are using to quit smoking.

Reasons to Start Smoking

People start smoking for many different reasons. Khaled, for example, started smoking because his friends were smoking, so he smoked with them. On the other hand, Abdullah smoked because it helped him to release stress due to some family problem that he had when he was young, but he became addicted. While Ahmed start to smoke when he was 30, but at the time he was not informed of how harmful smoking was.

Social Impact of Smoking

Family and friends are one of the most importing protective factors. In Saudi Arabia smoking is known as bad behavior and most parents do not want to see their kids smoking. For example, Khaled’s friends were smoking, but his family were strictly religious, and he was sixteen at the time. At first, he hid the fact that he was smoking from his parents, but they found out later and were not pleased.

While Abdullah's friends and family were smokers, they were perhaps obviously a motivation for him to start smoking.

Smoking and Health

Smoking affects your health and harms your body and maybe your social life. Although, Khaled does not think that smoking affected his health, yet he thinks it helps him socialize more, by having more conversation with different people during breaks. Additionally, Abdullah said no, it did not have any effect on his health. However, Ahmed said that it affects his lungs, but he did not know until he got older.

Quitting Smoking

The process quitting smoking is extremely difficult. In fact, many smokers know that smoking is affecting their lives, and they want to quit, and it is well known that trying to stop is not only extremely difficult, but doing so often has terrible side effect. While Ahmed was trying to quit he said that he avoids it and tried not to think about it by working more and keeping himself busy. He said that it was not easy seeing people smoke because he craves it, and it made him stressful and sometimes it was hard for him to focus. Khaled does not think of quitting, and he believes there is no reason for him to quit. Abdullah said he tried many times to quit using different methods; he said he once stopped smoking for a year, but he then relapsed and started to smoke again.

Conclusion

In this section you will discuss five concepts that you learned while conducting your research. This section should have at least five paragraphs.
