Essay 1: Summarizing, Quoting, Responding
All of your work in college, unless specifically requested otherwise, should be composed in MLA format. This sample paper covers the very basics. Note the following key elements:
1. Times new Roman font (12 point)
2. Ensure you include page numbers in the headings (note that there’s no need to include a page number in the first page—only the subsequent ones)
3. The work is double spaced
4. My title is italicized and it references the relevant assignment
5. I indented the first line of the paragraph with one tab
The last important matter concerns in-text citations, which are formatted differently depending on whether it’s a direct quote or paraphrase. For example, I might say:
In They Say, I say, the authors discourage writers from using bland formulas when introducing summaries because it undermines accuracy (38).
If I want to use a direct quote, however, I’d format it like this:
In They Say, I say, the authors claim that bland formulas, though serviceable, often forsake accuracy. Further, they claim, “In some cases, ‘he says’ may even drain the passion out of the ideas you are summarizing” (38).
