I. THE INTRODUCTION
A. Have you ever had a dream so real that you could not determine if what you experienced was real or not?
B. Dreaming is an unstoppable and constant concept that people normally do not think about. The average human
being dreams at least 4 to 6 times per night.
C. I often have dreams that I cannot explain, and it has intrigued me to learn more and share it with all of you because
I know everyone has experienced waking up and being “What the…” after a weird dream.
D. Dreaming is a collection of our disorganized weird thoughts that need to be released somehow, but we do not
usually think about all the elements that dreaming contains.
E. Today I will inform the audience on the relationship between REM sleep and dreaming, beliefs on what dreams
mean, and tips on how to influence your dreams.
F. First, let’s talk about how what REM sleep is and its relationship to dreaming.
II. THE BODY
A. What is REM sleep and how does it affect dreaming?
1. REM sleep is when the eyes move, heart rate changes, and the brain activity increases. This is the stage when
dreams occur. During this stage of sleep, you can experience visual sensations and some people can experience
auditory sensations (David, J. 2018).
2. During the REM stage, the brain paralysis the body to prevent movement, but some people suffer from REM
Behavior disorder, which causes paralysis to fail while in REM stage. A strange dreaming experience that is
very common is when you wake up from a dream and you can not move or speak even though your brain is
awake (Rampton, J. 2015).
Transition Statement: Now that we know some affects the REM stage has on our mind and body, I will now go on to
explain some beliefs on what dreams mean.
B. There are many beliefs on what dreams represent, but here are the most common beliefs
1. The terrifying nightmares that people normally have are usually about falling, being chased, and recurring
dreams. Falling in your dream indicates a loss of self-control, a fear of failure, and insecurity. Dreaming about
being chased represent avoiding a problem. Recurring dreams mean you have not dealt with a certain fear or
problem (Markley, B. 2012).
2. Dreams that are positive are about money, angels, or a deceased person. Dreaming about money means a big
change is going to happen in your life. When seeing an angel in your dream, it represents success, protection,
and happiness. Lastly, if a deceased person speaks only to you in your dream, then it is important to listen to
what they are saying because it could mean something important (Markley, B. 2012).
Transition Statement: Beliefs about dreams may help make you realize something about yourself, but dreaming
regularly and dreaming about what you want to dream about may lead to more discovery about yourself.
C. Here are some ways to influence your dreams and dream regularly:
1. Some techniques to train your brain to dream about a particular subject is to remind yourself throughout the
day what you want to dream about and tell yourself that you want to dream of a certain thing right before you
go to sleep. This will cause yourself to start to remember your dreams since most people have spent most of
their life telling their unconscious that their dreams are not important. It is also helpful to set an alarm to wake
up an hour earlier than usual or two hours after falling asleep and write your dreams down your dream. That is
usually the time when you are dreaming (Farquharson, M. 1998).
2. Some physical things to help dreams occur more often is to change your sleeping position and massaging
your scalp. There is a study explaining how sleeping on your stomach is the position where people have the
most dreams. Massaging your scalp releases endorphin, which gives you a relaxing sensation and serotonin,
which create melatonin. Melatonin is known for causing more lively dreams (Farquharson, M. 1998).
Transition Statement: These are just beliefs on how to help influence dreams and dream more often, but they may not
work for everyone.
III. THE CONCLUSION
A. In conclusion, I hope my topic has helped all of you to have a better understanding of dreaming.
B. Dreaming helps us to organize our weird thoughts and bring out the creative side of us. It makes us realize that are
minds are capable of extraordinary things.
C. Dreaming is such a huge topic that I believe we will never understand, but after learning about how dreaming
affects us, what dreams represent, and how to influence regular dreams
D. Even though we can not do most of the things that we dream about, at least we have an outlet to escape to where we
know anything can come true. It helps to open our eyes and realize more about ourselves if we just look deeper into
our subconscious. Sometimes all we need to do to take off the stress is to relax and dream a little dream.
