Karen Research Question: Is it possible to stop deforestation? Task 11.2 SOURCE SYNTHESIS

How this source relates to my question (e.g.: provides an answer; gives history on the question; something else)

How info from this source relates to my own experiences, observations, etc.

How this source has affected my own thinking about my question (e.g.: changed my way of thinking; confirmed something I already thought; pushed me in a new direction; etc.)

Ways I might use this source in my writing project (e.g.: as background info; as support for a specific point I might make; as a different way of viewing my question; something else)

Source Deforestation by Keenan, Rodney.

My question is, “How to Stop Deforestation.” And this source relates to my question because it defines what

The source indicated that deforestation causes a lot of problems such as loss of wildlife habitat. This really

After reading this source I realized that I can do something to better to actually lessen the rate of deforestation.

I will use it as my background information about deforestation and on how to stop it.

This will be the base of my information because this source centers on deforestation.

deforestation is. It also gives information regarding it such as the causes, and lastly on how to solve the issue.

saddens me because I adore all the creatures in the forest.

Source 2 Battle for the Amazon by Jeff Tollefson.

The author in this source described the things that were going on in the Amazon Rainforest. This source is important to my topic because it gives all the information on how Brazil manages to save and preserve the Amazon.

I lived in a rural area when I was growing up, which means that I was surrounded by an environment full of trees. For me, living that kind of life is the best thing a person can achieve in his life. That's why this source is important to me for it talks about the steps that Brazil took to achieve the preservation of the Amazon rainforest.

This source supports my idea that it's not too late for us to save our planet.

I will use this as my background information on how Brazil succeed. And also as a support for my point that reducing the deforestation rate is possible.

I will note that the deforestation prevention that happened in Brazil could also be apply to the other parts of the world.

Source 3 Reforestation by

This relates to my question because

I often plant trees in our backyard

when I was young, and I also saw how those trees grew as time went by. Just like the source indicated, we can help by planting more trees.

humans can make difference even if it’s small.

support for my idea that reforestation is plausible.

in my introduction.

Source 4 Forestry by Teeguarden, Dennis E.

This source relates to my question because it talks about the proper way of managing the forest lands.

My family and I planted trees in our previous house and so, managing them were one of our main goals.

This source made my belief stronger that proper management of lands can save the forests.

I will use this as a piece of background information on what’s the rate the trees grow.

Combine this idea with the ideas from Reforestation.

Based on the answers above, I would say that the main idea that overlapped in my sources is that deforestation can be prevented if guidelines are set.

Task 11.3

Developing Tentative Thesis:

Question: “How to Stop Deforestation?”

- First Possibility: Stopping deforestation is difficult, but preventing it is possible with the help of human involvement

and discipline.

- Second Possibility: Deforestation, a destructive activity on our planet, can be stopped if all humans become conscious

and educated when it comes to the unfortunate effects that deforestation brings to our environment.

Task 11.4

Outline

Thesis-and-support pattern (page 177-178 from The Norton Field Guide)

I. Give background information about deforestation.

A. Definition, causes, and effect using the first source called deforestation by Keenan.

B. Give information about my experience living in the rural area.

C. Thesis Statement.

II. Describe what happened in Brazil and how they reduced deforestation rate.

A. Relate the Amazon Rainforest’s problems to other forests, and how this can help the other nation reduce

deforestation rate. (Reasoning).

B. Use the source called Battle for Amazon by Jeff Tollefson (Support).

III. Include other ways how deforestation can be stopped.

A. Introduce the idea of reforestation (third source)

B. Present the concept of forestry (fourth source)

(Part A and B would include reasoning on how deforestation can be stop by doing reforestation and forestry.

Furthermore, I would support these reasoning, using my third and fourth sources.)

IV. Acknowledge all the reasoning.

A. Restate my thesis.

B. Summarize all the information above.

C. Encourage people to be aware about the destructive effects of deforestation.
