Art Analysis
Art is the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power. Art has empowered many civilizations and cultures by choosing a new perspective to see the world. It went through some movement. For this paper we will focus on twentieth century artists such as Richard Diebenkorn who was a painter and engraver. He painted series of ocean park pieces though his settling in Santa Monica, California. One of his abstract series is Ocean Park No.29. This paper will give a presentation of Ocean Park.
Description
Richard Diebenkorn was an American painter and engraver born 22 April 1922, in Portland, Oregon. He was teacher of Fine Arts at the California School in San Francisco. He was impressed by Matisse’s works. How he used shapes such as geometric figures to express his emotions. He admired the expressionism of Henri Matisse, so he decided to follow Matisse’s Structural vision of color, notably in the series started in 1967 in California. Ocean Park No.29 is from a series of over one hundred serene, light-filled abstractions began in 1967. Ocean Park No.29 was painted with Oil on canvas as the artist wanted the painting to last through time. Indeed, this painting is exhibited at Dallas Museum of Art in the contemporary art, situated on flour level precisely American Art 20th century. Its museum accession number is 1981.106 with dimensions of 100 3/4x81 3/4in for canvas and 103x84x3 ½ in of frame. Ocean Park depicted geometric shapes such as asymmetric triangles, rectangle, and vertical and horizontal lines. Oil on canvas represents the painting brighter, pastel, shiny and warm. This painting describes the landscape of Santa Monica with flat figures separated by fine lines. Those lines represent the limitation between landscapes. There is not objects, but just colors, lines, shapes, textures, and form.
Analysis
Richard Diebenkorn used oil on canvas because he knew that oil material will last longer and do not dry quickly over time. Ocean Park No.29 is bright, flat, and smooth. There are approximatively eight colors such as blue, yellow, purple, white, green, orange, white, and grey. Blue color is altered from light to deep blue, which differs sea and ocean space. Yellow color represents a beautiful sun or sunset on a beach. Purple color does not vehicle a specific meaning. White color describes the sand, and orange may be a small fence gate. Green color is the grass in Richard’s garden. In addition, grey color is a balcony. The arrangement of the colors is showing the calm, and peaceful ocean landscape for those who like to relax and work at home. Indeed, the lines in Ocean Park helps to identify different landscapes, such as sea, and earth. Looking at the painting, the viewer can travel through space to this beautiful paradise.
Interpretation
Abstract art is art that does not attempt to represent an accurate depiction of a visual reality but instead use shapes, colors, forms, and gestural marks to achieve its effect, In Ocean Park No29, Richard Diebenkorn used abstract art to describe the beauty of California at the sea side. His art showed flat and depth ocean with geometric figures, and evoked a sun-filled interior space and the landscape of Southern California. In the American history, 20th century is the beginning of Great depression, and two world wars. In the twentieth century, artists were challenged to new changes due to economic downturn and war. In this era, many movements were born like fauvism, abstract expressionism, and others. Fauvism started with one of the famous artist Henri Matisse, French artist. Fauvism movement came from the word fauves meaning wild beasts-lost popularity. As fauvism eventually faded into the calmer, more thoughtful expressionistic as abstract expressionism where Richard Diebenkorn interpreted the idea of expressing a state of mind. Those abstract artists want the audience to feel free of thinking, and saw images would have a unique, instinctive meaning for each viewer. This means that every viewer will have a different perspective of a piece of art. As we see the title and the colors in the painting, we can see this is a significant relationship between both. Richard decided to live in Santa Monica where he was looking at the ocean view from his studio. This painting creates an inner peace with myself. He wanted the audience to see how peacefully, it is to live in Santa Monica.
Judgement
I dislike abstract arts because I does not get the concept when I was looking at it. They do not express or show objects, feelings, or emotions. They just give us the sense that we do not use a deep thinking to read their messages or visions. This painting was more explicit as the author colors indicators represent some elements as sun, earth, and ocean. The title helps me to judge more accurately.
