Your opportunity Operating from within the Geological Survey of Queensland, you will provide professional leadership, strategic direction and management of the Petroleum and Gas Geoscience unit functions to enable delivery of programs that research, evaluate, and deliver geoscientific information on the petroleum and gas resources and resource potential of Queensland to customers.

You will be required to maintain and update the knowledge of the petroleum and gas resources and resource potential of Queensland. This will involve managing the Petroleum and Gas Geoscience unit including the training of junior staff, compilation of petroleum resource data, assessment of land in support of the competitive tendering process, monitoring of company activity and the promotion of the state’s petroleum industry.

The position is responsible for leading and managing multi-disciplinary projects, departmental and inter- governmental teams and consultants involved in national mapping and research projects.

Key duties and accountabilities o Provide professional and technical leadership and management of Petroleum and Gas Geoscience unit

activities to match international standards and to address state-wide priorities to meet both industry and government demands.

o Provide specialist technical and scientific information and advice on seismic interpretation, lithostratigraphic

interpretation, basin analysis, and resource assessment to highlight the petroleum and gas prospectivity of the state.

o Lead and develop the Petroleum and Gas Geoscience unit to improve the understanding of the

prospectivity of Queensland in line with current international basin analysis and resource assessment models and concepts.

o Provide specialist technical and scientific information and advice on petroleum and gas resources and resource potential of the state.

o Contribute to the competitive tendering process through the assessment of vacant land for petroleum and

gas exploration potential. o Provide high-level strategic and professional advice and recommendations to the Minister, Director-

General, Deputy Director-General, Chief Government Geologist, industry, and government on petroleum issues for Queensland, particularly in areas of exploration potential for petroleum and gas.

o Represent the department at the State and Federal level in industry and community forums and in

collaborative activities with agencies from other States. o Develop and manage joint projects with other agencies (eg Universities, CRCs, CSIRO, etc) to advance

geoscience research priorities, and identify and develop collaborative projects with Geoscience Australia and other State Geological Surveys which enhance National and State priorities.

o Develop networks and consult with peers, departmental staff, clients, industry and community groups,

and other agencies to achieve strategic goals and objectives and meet departmental priorities. o Implement and maintain quality procedures and systems to ensure efficient and effective compilation and

curation of data collected by government and industry to enable timely on-supply to customers. o Lead the strategic and operational planning and project management of the Petroleum and Gas

Geoscience unit to address state-wide petroleum and gas research and assessment priorities determined in consultation with industry bodies.

o Provide innovative leadership to the Petroleum and Gas Geoscience unit by managing multidisciplinary

work teams to achieve strategic goals and objectives. o Manage and ensure effective and efficient utilisation of the Petroleum and Gas Geoscience unit finances,

assets, and people.

Mandatory requirement/special conditions • A degree in Earth Science or equivalent. • A high level of knowledge and experience in petroleum and gas exploration and resource assessment

techniques, current models and concepts.
