Honesty, compassion, and remaining open minded.

In order for people to trust you and work well with you they must have TRUST in you as their leader.

Being compassionate about the company or organization you are leading helps you become successful. The organization can see if you are just there for a paycheck, or if you are there because you love what you are a part of.

Keeping an open mind helps when you are needing the team’s input for ideas, and suggestions. Staying open minded lets the team know that you value what they have to say and will take their thoughts and opinions into consideration.

What is the importance of trust in leadership?

Trust is an important quality to carry as a leader. Without trust, leadership can become a hard task to do successfully.

Trust must be gained, so starting from the beginning of the leadership role, good communication is important to gain that trust.

Communication is a part of the trust component in any type of relationship between a single person, or group of people.

Parents, coaches, and players must have trust that I will do my job as their President.

What are the qualities you want most in an employee? Why?

Employees are expected to have the same qualities as that of their leaders. With these qualities, you gain trust, which creates an open line of communication which includes those outside of an organization

Board members communicate any difficulties they are faced with or need his support with. Mr. Rodriguez wants his board members to fulfill their duties because they want to, not because they were nominated for the positions.

As the leader, he would expect his board members to stay open minded in their positions. Many times parents have opinions and want changes made. The parents do not make the final decisions, but staying open minded can help with any and all positive changes that are made along the way.

What is the role of effective communication in leadership?

In leadership, effective communication needs to be constant.

The role of effective communication helps not only him as a leader, but the organization as a team. When there are people who are helping you keep an organization running smoothly, communication is top priority to avoid confusion.

When everyone understands what is expected of them and their leader, progress can be made.

How important is it to have a strong team behind you?

Mr. Rodriguez was very happy to talk about the team that works behind him for CYO. He said that they have been a strong unit for several years now. They not only work together as a team to make sure the job gets completed successfully, but they have had to work overtime to get out of some obstacles that have happened in the recent months. The CYO concession stand was broken into and many valuable items were stolen. The organization came together and were able to raise money and accept donations from other community organizations. They were available to work more hours than usual and were flexible to help in any way possible.

Mr. Rodriguez has a full time job outside of holding the President title. So, he is not always able to physically be there to make sure the job is getting done. He mentioned that he does not need to appoint someone to take the leadership position because he knows the job gets done with or without him. He believes, with trust and strong communication skills, a team will be successful with or without the presence of their leader. A strong leader teaches and guides those he believes will one day be able to run the same organization with no help from a leader. The leaders who trust those that are part of a team unit will be able to hand over the leadership position with no worries of the organization failing.

How does a servant leader motivate the unmotivated?

A servant leader motivates the unmotivated in the CYO organizations in many different ways. There have been fundraisers to help parents who can not afford registration fees. The fundraisers are sold by the parents and board members and half of what is earned is then put away for those families who are not able to afford the sport fees.

Motivation is helpful for those who start losing interest in what they have previously loved to do. Sometimes having special promotions for returning players keeps the parents motivated to continue to keep bringing their athletes back to CYO. Giving them a discount for playing multiple sports within a Fall or Spring season is one of the promotions CYO offers.

Family discounts are also available for multiple family members who live in the same household. Many times it is difficult for parents to juggle work, practice, and games. Being a close family organization also allows parents who trust other parents who can help with carpooling to and from different events for the athletes.

If your subordinates know you lack integrity to do what is right, there cannot be trust.

With no trust, they will always wonder if you value them and will be there when you are needed.

I always look for that person who will perform a task because it needs to be done.

I also look for someone who will do their job when no one is there to supervise them.

If directions are properly communicated, there will be fewer mistakes.

Effective communication ensures that all are kept involved and any task will be completed correctly the first time.

Be honest and give honest feed back.

Hold people accountable and be sure they know where they stand with you.

If you do not have trust, you will not have a successful team.

Team members need to know you will not overreact or judge them.

If nothing else, they need to know you are listening, even if you cannot solve their problems.

Commitment to the organization.

If they are committed, and want to do the correct thing, then as a leader it is my job to get them where they need to be.

Always keep them informed.

People want to know why they are doing something.

Employees should feel that their leader is approachable, which falls back to trusting the leader as well as the leader trusting the employee would come to them to ask questions.

As a leader, you are only as good as your team.

In leadership, if you believe you are the most important, feelings will get hurt.

When a team does well, praise them and give credit where credit is due.

If the team is not performing well, take responsibility as a leader.

The best way to motivate people is to find out more about them.

Learn about personal goals, and their personal life then find what motivates them in their personal life and see if work is just a means to get by.

You must establish a relationship and trust with your employees and must know that you all are a team, their work impacts everyone as a whole and challenge them to succeed.

As leaders, it is our responsibility to help people follow goals and succeed with solid guidance.
