Topic: Class Room Renovation

Introduction

The ITEC 331-01 technical writing class will begin a remodeling project. This report will asses the feasibility of this project based on: availability of information, suitability of the project for the amount of time available between now and MAY 1, 2009.

Availability of information

Information resources are available to remodel the classroom. This is based on the various disciplines represented in the class. Students in the disciplines of Electronics and Computer Engineering Technology provide a knowledge base for addressing the electrical requirements of the remodeling project. Students in the discipline of Construction Technology will likely provide the primary knowledge base for the project. The information they provide will apply to tasks such as, scheduling, tear down, safety, and job site organization. Finally, student in the discipline of Civil Engineering Technology can serve as a knowledge base for ensuring that the remodeling project does not compromise the structure of the Engineering building or violate any relevant ordnances pertaining to projects of this nature.

Though information to attempt project is available, it does not ensure that the level of skill and or experience of the project members will be sufficient. It is likely that supervision and guidance of the students will be necessary for the project to be completed. Furthermore, scheduling conflicts amongst the students are likely, and will hamper the physical availability of information and skills.

The Time Frame

The six week time frame to complete the project will not be enough. Due to relevant events outside scope of the ITEC 331-01 class, the students will not devote the necessary work hours towards the project. Events such as, final exams, presentations, projects and individual jobs cannot go ignored by project members.

Budget

$25,000.

Conclusion

This project is not feasible. Despite the availability information, the experience and skills of the students is not likely to prove consistent nor adequate enough. Though budget constraints could be met, the class simply cannot devote enough time to complete the remodeling project in six weeks, it is not suitable for this time frame.

Topic: PlayStaion3 Supercomputer Construction Project

Introduction

The Play Station 3 (PS3) entertainment system implements the “Cell” Processor. The Cell processor in combination with cluster networking makes the PS3 an economical alternative to traditional supercomputers. The goal of this project is the construction of a 9 node(computer/PS3) PS3 cluster for the Department of Computer Science. This report will asses the feasibility of this project based on: availability of information, suitability of the project for the amount of time available between now and MAY 1, 2009.

Availability of information

Information resources are available to build the PS3 Cluster. A step by step guide by Dr. Gaurav Khanna and Chris Poulin of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth have built a step guide available online . Also, clusters of 8 and 32 nodes are available for purchase from fixstars.com.

The Time Frame

The six week time frame to complete the project will be enough. The project only involves the physical construction of the cluster. Furthermore, there are existing procedures for software installation so no time intensive programming is necessary.

Budget

$11,000, total cost.

Conclusion

This project is feasible. Regardless of procurement, the major obstacle of this project would be shipping the nodes to the target location. 4weeks is more than sufficient for shipping time, while the physical installation and setup of PS3s will be will be completed in less than 1 week. Leaving one week to spare.

Topic: Implementing Online Calendar/Task sharing for mobile Devices at TSU

Introduction

organization through online calendar sharing formats such as ICAL(.ics) have become integral to the functionality mobile devices like cellphones, smart phones, and IPhones. The capability to inform and update friends and co-workers of new events and tasks has become fundamental for mobile devices. The goal of this project is the adoption and use of basic ICAL calendar sharing by TSU faculty to automatically inform students of new assignments and projects via there mobile devices. This report will asses the feasibility of this project based on: availability of information, suitability of the project for the amount of time available between now and MAY 1, 2009.

Availability of information

Information resources are available to implement a calendar sharing system. The are may free and affordable calendar sharing tools and programs online. Furthermore, all major email providers such as Google® Gmail®, Yahoo Mail®, Microsoft Hotmail®, and AOL® all have online calendar that have options for sharing amongst others and syncing with mobile devices. Each of these providers already have documentation for usage of their respective calendar services. Further still, large corporations use services like Microsoft Exchange Server® and Blackberry® Enterprise to provide employees event and task shearing tools for desktop and mobile computing. As a result, Documentation about the large scale usage and implementation of event and task notification are available as well.

The Time Frame

The six week time frame to complete the project will enough. the project is informative and does not require the development of any of these services. Faculty and student must only be informed of calendar/task sharing resources relevant to their mobile devices and email. The 6 week time frame will suffice for tasks such as presentations, seminars, meetings, and development and deployment of informative media.

Budget

$200 for informative medias, such as fliers and posters

Conclusion

This project is feasible. The project primary involves the physical dispersal of information,. No product development of any sort is needed. The major obstacle is likely to be scheduling delays in face to face communication mediums. These can generally be dealt within a 6 week time frame.
