Mike’s Ethics Outline: Don’t tell on me, or else!

I. Intro Comment by Taylor, Michael (NSBC): The Intro paragraph is your first paragraph; it is made up of three parts: the Attention Getter, the Motivation, and the Overview.

A. Attention Getter: As Lord Acton stated in a letter to Archbishop Creighton, “Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely” (Dalberg, 1887). A person does not need to look very far in current military events to find this assertion to be true. Comment by Taylor, Michael (NSBC): The AG should be 1-2 sentences MAX!!! Get the reader’s attention; this is how you enter the stage.

B. Motivation: As Senior Leaders, exercising proper and ethical use of authority is imperative so that the erosion of confidence of the junior enlisted in their senior leadership does not occur. Comment by Taylor, Michael (NSBC): The Motivation is one sentence composed of three parts: Who, What, Why. Who is your audience. What are you telling them. Why should they listen. As Senior Leaders (Who) exercising proper and ethical use of authority is imperative (What) so that the erosion of confidence of the junior enlisted in their senior leadership does not occur. (Why).

C. Overview: This essay will discuss the background of an abuse of power case study as well as its impact on the command. Comment by Taylor, Michael (NSBC): The Overview is one sentence that lists the Main Points (MP) assigned per the PE. The Ethics Essay PE lists two MPs: Background and Impact.

II. Body

A. Main Point 1: Background Comment by Taylor, Michael (NSBC): In MP1, you are simply giving a recap of the case you chose, that is all. The case I chose is on pg.4, Don’t tell on me, or else! You should cite the Encyclopedia of Ethical Failures as this is the source where you retrieved this information. Per the PE: “Main point (1) Background: This point will explain the background of the scenario the student is analyzing. It should explain the details surrounding the ethical decision-making of the leaders in the scenario.”

1. Admiral punished for illegally demoting three subordinates in retaliation.

2. Admiral forced to retire.

Transition Sentence 1: Understanding the background of the ethical failure allows for the examination of the impact this decision had on the command and its Sailors. Comment by Taylor, Michael (NSBC): Transition sentences (TS) are found between MPs; they are the last sentence in the last paragraph of the MP. The TS closes out the current MP and introduces the next MP.

B. Main Point 2: Impact Comment by Taylor, Michael (NSBC): In MP2, you will list the potential impact that could arise from the case you chose. This is where your critical thinking comes in. Per the PE: “Main point (2) Impact: This point the student will explain the impact of the decision the leader made. Students will explore how the leader failed to embody the core values and ethos. In addition, the essay should explore how the decision affected areas such as sailorization, good order and discipline, unit morale, and mission readiness.”

1. Faith of subordinates lost.

2. Respect of the position is lost.

3. “Second hand bullying.”

4. Negative health impact

III. Conclusion

A. Summary: This essay discussed the background of an abuse of power case study as well as its impact on the command Comment by Taylor, Michael (NSBC): The Summary is one sentence that recaps the MPs, similarly to how the Overview presented the MPs.

B. Remotivation: As Senior Leaders, exercising proper and ethical use of authority is imperative so that the erosion of confidence of the junior enlisted in their senior leadership does not occur. Comment by Taylor, Michael (NSBC): The Remotivation is the same as the Motivation, one sentence. You can be creative and write a new one, but It must include the Who, What, and Why. It is completely fine to use the same statement that you used for your Motivation. It’s up to you.

C. Closing: Sailors cited one of the major reasons for leaving the Navy before retirement was due to their mistrust of their senior leadership (Snodgrass & Kohlmann, 2014). If the ongoing war on attrition is to be won, it truly starts with the current leaders within the military. Comment by Taylor, Michael (NSBC): The Closing can be 1-2 sentences and should leave the reader wanting more; leave them intrigued. If you have a famous quote that relates to the topic, use it. The Closing is how you exit the stage.
