Grand Lake
Grand Lake St. Mary’s is about a fifteen minute drive from where I live and it has
literally gone to the dumps. Even at a young age I have always been a water bug, swimming,
fishing, jet skiing and boating. I can remember the days when we were able to do all of these
things in Grand Lake. These were some of the best memories of mine, going out with family and
friends and spending a Sunday afternoon on the lake.
Environmentalist had predicted many years ago that the lake would go bad and they were
correct. They were able to make this prediction because of the depth of Grand Lake. Grand Lake
is a manmade lake and is only about 9 ft deep in the deepest areas. Their supposed solution about
5 years ago was to install a spill way to allow the water to circulate more and prevent some of the
nasty problems. This summer Grand Lake had hit an all time low. Anytime you would drive a
few miles from the lake you were forced to roll your windows up because of the nasty smell. The
smell, which would make most people gag, would actually seep through your car and you could
not get rid of the stench for a few minutes. This was not the worst part though. The lake had been
classified as very high risk for anyone who came in contact with it or anything from it. Rumor
has it that a dog had jumped in the lake over the summer and was brought to a vet who then

claimed the cause of death was from algae in the lake. I would love to find a way to clean the
lake up and make it a more enjoyable area for everyone.
I feel angry that we have let the lake stoop to this level. The lake could be such a nice
place to go and enjoy but we have ruined it. I think the best way to fix up the lake is by building
a large wall in the middle of the lake and pump the water out of one side and dig it deeper then
dump the rest of the water there and do the same to the other side. I know that that the alga in the
lake is a major problem. Last summer the lake was the worst it has ever been and no one was to
come in contact with anything around it. No one has their own view on why this lake has become
this bad but I believe it is because of the depth of the lake and not totally the farmers’ faults.
I am interested to find out what are all the factors that have caused the lake to become
this bad. Also, I would also like to know about ways to fix the lake to become a more attractive
fishing, swimming, and boating area.
