It is important for an art therapist to understand multiple theoretical perspectives even if their practice only focuses on one so that they are better able to assist their patient. As a therapist you have to be able to recognize all of the different types of cases that there could be. Even if your specialty is in just dealing the autistic spectrum you would need to know as well about the other types of things that could be going on. This is important to fully help the patient because if what they need help with is out of their practice they need to recognize that and get them to someone who does practice in that area.

Art therapists should have an all encompassing skill set to pick on anything that could be going on, even if they do not practice it. Also, some patients might not respond to the same treatment that others do and you need to adjust your perspective on that based on the needs of the client and how to better help them.
