Create Risks and Mitigation Measures for a Project Scenario

ASSIGNMENT: Identify three risks, then describe mitigation measures you would take to

prevent each risk from occurring (or lessening their impact). Use at least 200 words for each

risk.

Risk 1

Name of Risk: Overall Project Schedule

Category: Schedule

Mitigation measure: The scope of this project is limited to developing a mobile application that

gives information about the multiple rides at various theme parks. The information should include

directions to various rides, description of the rides and estimated wait time at each ride. The project

looks pretty simple overall but there are many discrepancies involved such as routes to the rides, wait

time depending upon the day and time. The number of customers visiting the amusement parks varies

across the year. This will require a lot of research data. Above all the application is also expected to be

user friendly. I would also emphasize on the fact that there is a difference in the type of visitors visiting

these parks based on the geographical location of the park so some of the components of the

applications should be tailor made for the particular location. However, this can only be determined

after survey. Since CIO emphasized on having the application ready by Mother’s Day, there is always

a risk of staying on track and developing the app in the allotted schedule. I can mitigate this by

interviewing with employees at each park, take help of the research data available on google. I would

also have safety expert among my project team who can guide us through identifying the difficulty

level of the rides.

Risk 2

Name of Risk: Conflicts with other ongoing projects

Category: Resource

Mitigation measure: As it is pretty clear that I am expected to develop this app and take care of this

project simultaneously while I am working on the other ongoing projects and it is also clear that my

immediate Boss is not involved with this project. Amusement parks are the main attraction for kids,

so each ride needs to be described based on its difficulty level for the adults, parents, and kinds to

understand which ride is appropriate depending on the age group. Due to some of the reasons

mentioned above it is very important to have extensive survey based on amusement park employees’

feedback and personality traits of the park visitors. This will require me to commit myself completely

to this project. However, i have equal responsibility towards other projects on my books because I

have to keep my immediate boss happy as well. This risk can be mitigated by giving more

responsibilities to my current team and as my current projects are towards completion, I can rely on

my current project team. At the same time, I can conduct various brainstorming sessions with the firm

developing the application on how the data will be collected and provide my inputs to be incorporated.

I can also consult my CIO in regular basis to make sure the project is on the right track.

Risk 3

Name of Risk: Authenticity and Compatibility issues.

Category: Scope

Mitigation measure: It is pretty evident that other amusement parks such as Hershey park, Busch

Gardens and Disneyworld have already started to work on their own mobile apps, due to short

amount of time available to develop the app, there is a possibility that knowingly or unknowingly

this app might look similar or blatantly a copy or rip off of the existing application for the other

theme parks. This might end up in major authenticity and patent ownership issues which will lead to

legal proceedings. So, it is important to crosscheck the proceedings to make sure the application is

authentic. The existing applications for other amusement parks can act as a guide but it is important

to make sure we do not copy. During the development process, it is important to check the

compatibility of the ap to various operating systems available in the market. We may have to tailor

make the app for each system based on how it acts on them. The speed might differ on each OS.

We can mitigate this by checking the app on each operating system also on different versions of each

system. Following functional and non-functional tests can be performed to make this application a

success.

• Hardware Tests • Operating Systems Tests.

• Network and speed tests.

• Devices and Compatibility Test.
