Introduction

This report analyzes and tracks the data given in monthly sales reports from the local restaurant, ABC, located in ABC, TX, United States. Address is XYZ. The aforementioned sales reports compare the periods of the month (31 days) of January 2019 and January 2020. The establishment offers seafood-based food choices, most of which is customized according to menu options and customer preference. The following factors are to be extracted from collected data to be analyzed for this report. They include payments, discounts, and category sales. The purpose is to summarize and compare the statistical results of these sales reports and construct appropriate responses to company performance.

Descriptive Data Analysis (Month of January 2020)

For the monthly report of January 2019, measures of central tendency and frequency are examined for three variables. For the payments, the mean payment transaction is $20.36. For subcategories, the most frequently-occurring payment transaction occurred by credit card, with 1255 transactions constituting 89% of total payments, and with an average of $20.87 per payment. The least-occurring transaction was by gift card, with 4 transactions and an average of $13.08 per payment.

For the discounts, the mean discount applied was $4.18, with a mode discount of $1.55 and a median discount of $4.18. The most frequently applied discount is the “10% off sale” at 24 applied discounts or 26% of total applied discounts, with the least occurring discounts occurring only at 1 for several subcategories.

For the category sales, the mean sales amount was $9.42 per sale, with a median sale of $11.44, and mode of $11.43. The most frequently occurring sale, for subcategories occurred with uncategorized sales, at 1871 sales or 70% of all category sales. In contrast the least frequent sale was “extra protein” at 14 sales.

Descriptive Data Analysis (Month of January 2019)

For the monthly report of January 2020, descriptive statistics are also examined. For payments for this period was $19.66. For frequency, the largest occurring payment transaction (by credit card) occurred at 762 transactions or 90% of all payments. In contrast, the least occurring payment took place at only 86 times, or 10% of payments made. Sub categorically, the means for these two frequencies, “Card” and “Cash” have average payments of $20.11 and $15.67 respectively.

Discounts for this period experienced a mean discount of $3.28, and had a median applied discount of $2.38. The mode discount also measured at $2.38. For frequency, the largest frequently occurring discount lies at 16 applications for “Rewards 10”, or 30% of all discounts. Finally, category sales, we calculated at a mean or average sale of $9.09. The median price for a category sale was measured at $11.05. Additionally, the mode sale was calculated and observed at $11.06. Measures of frequency has shown that the most frequently occurring category sale was measured at 1179 sales, or 73% of the total amount of category sales. The least frequent type of sale transacted was measured at only 15 sales for the sub category “extra protein”.

Analysis, Comparing of Results

Looking at the extrapolated data from the following sales reports for the restaurant between the two time periods of January for the consecutive years, it is observed that data for the period of January 2020 experienced stronger performance in overall sales for the company. In all three variables that were observed, calculations have shown better sales performance and financial health, with greater average payments and sales transactions from customers made to goods and services.

For payments made, despite the average transaction only being marginally larger than January of 2019, total payments made for January 2020 was nearly double the total payments accrued in month of last year.

Category Sales for the 2020 month also showed total sales figures that nearly doubled that of the figures accrued during January of 2019. This observation follows the data shown in payments from the sales reports, and once more shows a higher number of customers being attracted to the establishment. As much of the food options are custom-ordered, customers are shown frequently to choose the sub category “uncategorized” as the majority of sales, consistently, in both periods

Additionally, for discounts applied, more discounts were applied to customer payments in the 2020 month, and the mean cost of discounts applied to goods and services per transaction was nearly one dollar more. This would initially show a greater potential loss of cash flow due to items not being paid at full price, as shown to any potential business partner or owner. However, due to the significantly high volume if payments and sales, the average payment made for the company’s services will still contribute a reasonable profit, as shown with comparison between the two periods.

Due to the information presented, it is therefore reasonable to infer, from a general managerial perspective, that consistent business practices and exposure will maintain increasing growth in the restaurant’s revenue, and not sustain losses in future months. This of course is also dependent on other unforeseen factors, such as the economy of the nation affecting wages, taxes, and social behavior of potential consumers with budgets to maintain. Additionally, the utilizing different sales events and offering new products may draw new customers to the establishment. As such, it is important that a company such as this one in the restaurant industry maintain appealing foods and service to retain customer loyalty and build up an increasingly positive reputation.
