The main job of a Mechanical Engineer is to design structures, machines, and other products. Since the degree plan starts broad you as a student have time to choose what products you want to design. For example, a student interested in designing structures for the Aerospace industry would take electives pertaining to the industry.

Table 1: Relevant Courses (Mechanical)

UNT offers specific courses for Mechanical and Energy Engineers interested in working in the Aerospace industry. The courses you take will give you experience that will not only help you obtain the job and the knowledge you will need in the industry.

We found an entry level position with Lockheed Martin as a Satellite System Engineer Associate that required the applicant to have experience in performing tests, training, and evaluating spaceflight mission operations. This entry level position does not require previous job experience but does require the knowledge gained in these courses. Another posting from Lockheed Martin as a Manufacturing Engineer Associate required the applicant to have the ability to interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and specifications. Schematics related to the industry are taught in industry specific courses.

We found a position with Bell Helicopter as an Engineer whose responsibilities would include aerodynamic analysis and flight test engineering. The relevant courses would prepare an entry level applicate to perform these responsibilities.

All the job ads we found required a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering but the industry expected you to come with previous experience in courses you took.
