This orientation or therapy suggests that beliefs and behaviors are responsible for the presenting
problem of an individual’s development. Someone undergoing this orientation is advised to
identify, challenge and adjust maladaptive practices and beliefs. They should also work with a
therapist to enable them to identify less-useful or negative automatic thoughts. In addition, CBT,
that is, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy emphasizes mainly upon diverse patterns of thinking with a

reduced attention on emotional aspects of relationships as well as patterns of different habits
(Dobson & Dobson, 2018).
1 WHEN COUPLES WORK TOGETHER WHEN ADDICTION IS AN ISSUE IN THE
RELATIONSHIP IT HELPS PREVENT RELAPSE IN THE FUTURE BY
COMMUNICATING WHAT COULD BE POSSIBLE TRIGGERS (DOBSON, ET.AL,
2019). WHEN USING CBT FOR COUPLES IT IS IMPORTANT TO HAVE BOTH
INDIVIDUALS PRESENT AT THE FIRST SESSION. THE ADDICTION SHOULD BE
TREATED AS AN ISSUE FOR BOTH INDIVIDUALS AND NOT JUST ONE PERSON.
THE ADDICTION AFFECTS BOTH INDIVIDUALS IN THE RELATIONSHIP,
THEREFORE, IT MUST BE STRESSED THAT THE BLAME DOESN’T FALL ON A SOLE
PERSON. YOU CAN ENCOURAGE MODERATION OF SUBSTANCE USE OR STRESS
THE IMPORTANCE OF ABSTINENCE.
CLAUDETTE AND RICKY BOTH RECENTLY STOPPED USING ALCOHOL AND
MARIJUANA A MONTH AGO (ALLYN AND BACON, 2000). RICKY ADMITTED THAT
HE STILL DRINKS IN MODERATION AND WILL BECOME VERBALLY ABUSIVE
WITH THE CHILDREN. RICKY NOTICES THAT HE HAS DEVELOPED CERTAIN
NEGATIVE CHARACTERISTICS EXHIBITED BY HIS FATHER. RICKY WAS ALSO
INCARCERATED DUE TO SELLING DRUGS AND WAS RELEASED AFTER 2 YEARS
IN PRISON. THE COUPLE HAS STARTED BECOMING ACTIVE AND ELIMINATING
HAVING ALCOHOL IN THE HOUSE.
THE SHORT-TERM GOALS WOULD BE TO HAVE RICKY REDUCE PURCHASING
ALCOHOL DAILY AND GO TO AA MEETINGS WITH CLAUDETTE. A LONG-TERM
GOAL WOULD BE FOR RICKY TO ELIMINATE PURCHASING ALCOHOL
COMPLETELY. ONE INTERVENTION THAT I WOULD USE FOR RICKY WOULD BE
A MORE INTENSIVE INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING SESSION SURROUNDING HIS
CHILDHOOD. RICKY APPEARS TO STILL HAVE SOME NEGATIVE
CHARACTERISTICS PASSED DOWN FROM HIS FATHER. CLAUDETTE I WOULD
LOCATE A WOMEN’S RETREAT FOCUSING ON EMPOWERMENT AND STRENGTH.
CLAUDETTE COULD BENEFIT FROM SEEING HOW HER ROLE AS A WOMAN IS
IMPORTANT FOR HER CHILDREN AND FIANCÉ.

ANOTHER INTERVENTION FOR RICKY AND CLAUDETTE WOULD BE COUPLES
COUNSELING SURROUNDING WHAT IS APPROPRIATE DURING A MARRIAGE.
CLAUDETTE BELIEVES THAT IT IS APPROPRIATE TO HAVE MALE FRIENDS
AROUND, BUT IT CAUSES AN ISSUE FOR RICKY. RICKY BECOMES UPSET AND
JEALOUS ABOUT OBSERVING CLAUDETTE WALKING WITH OTHER MEN. RICKY
FEELS THAT HE CAN’T COMPETE WITH SOME OF THE MALE FRIENDS THAT
CLAUDETTE BRINGS AROUND. IF THEY CAN’T WORK THROUGH THIS ISSUE IT
WOULDN’T BE A GOOD IDEA TO GET MARRIED WITH THE SAME ISSUE
LINGERING. IT IS MY HOPE THAT THEY CAN WORK THROUGH THE ISSUE AND
STILL GET MARRIED.
Conclusion
Lastly, it is clear that Cognitive behavioral therapy is a somewhat goal-oriented and short term
psychotherapy treatment which usually takes a hands-on approach that is practical to aid in solving
diverse problems; whether regarding an individual, couples or families as a whole. It main objective
is to alter habits which are behind the difficulties faced by numerous individuals thus changing how
they feel. On the issue of whether or not CBT really works, it is clear that it has the highest clinical
evidence which shows that it works. According to several studies, it is as least as efficient as
medication used for numerous kinds of anxiety and depression conditions.
