MASSIVE NUMBER OF VICTIMS. IN ADDITION TO TRACKING DOWN SEVERAL WITNESSES

AND FAMILY MEMBERS TO QUESTION, THE DETECTIVES MUST ALSO EXAMINE A SIZABLE

VOLUME OF EVIDENCE (READ KOCSIS & PALERMO, 2007). Further, there is repeatedly a great deal

of media consideration engrossed in these cases, which can add to the total pressure that is cited on

investigators (Holmes & Holmes, 2009). 3 FOR EXAMPLE, THE INVESTIGATION INTO THE

MURDERS COMMITTED BY THE SO-CALLED "ZODIAC KILLER" in the 1960s and 1970s involved

tracking down and interviewing hundreds of witnesses and family members and sifting through large amounts

of evidence. The media attention surrounding the case was intense, which added to the pressure on

investigators.

ADDRESS THESE CHALLENGES. FIRST, CRIMINAL PROFILERS CAN ASSIST IN

IDENTIFYING PATTERNS IN THE MURDERS THAT WOULD OTHERWISE BE DIFFICULT TO

SEE. FOR INSTANCE, THEY MIGHT BE ABLE TO RECOGNIZE A SIGNATURE TRAIT SHARED

BY THE MURDERERS THAT CAN BE USED TO LINK THE VARIOUS INVESTIGATIONS (READ

KOCSIS & PALERMO, 2007). 3 SECOND, BY PROVIDING INFORMATION ABOUT THE TYPES

OF PEOPLE WHO ARE MOST LIKELY TO PARTICIPATE IN THE SUITABLE TYPES OF

CRIMINAL CONDUCT, CRIMINAL PROFILERS CAN HELP LAW ENFORCEMENT REDUCE THE

NUMBER OF PROSPECTIVE SUSPECTS. THIS COULD ASSIST SAVE A SUBSTANTIAL

AMOUNT OF TIME AND MONEY DURING THE INVESTIGATION. 2 LAST BUT NOT LEAST,

CRIMINAL PROFILERS CAN PROVIDE INFORMATION ON THE KILLER'S MOTIVATIONS,

WHICH MIGHT BE USEFUL IN FIGURING OUT HOW TO CATCH THE CRIMINAL (HOLMES &

HOLMES, 2009).

IN CONCLUSION, USING PROFILING AS A TOOL IN THE INVESTIGATION OF SERIAL AND

MASS MURDERS CAN BE OF GREAT ASSISTANCE. 4 IT IS POSSIBLE TO RECOGNIZE

PATTERNS, CONNECT PREVIOUSLY UNRELATED CASES, AND REDUCE THE NUMBER OF

POTENTIAL SUSPECTS. In addition to this, it can shed light on the reasons why the killer did what they

did, which is extremely helpful when trying to figure out how to apprehend them.
