1 HUMANISTIC-EXISTENTIAL PSYCHOTHERAPY AND COGNITIVE- BEHAVIORAL THERAPY

Humanistic-existential psychotherapy is a type of therapy that focuses on the individual's experience and subjective reality. This type of therapy is based on the belief that humans are essentially good and that they can grow and change (Chigangaidze, 2021, p. 147). 3 THE THERAPIST STRIVES TO CREATE A SUPPORTIVE AND NON-JUDGMENTAL ENVIRONMENT WHERE CLIENTS CAN EXPLORE THEIR THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS. This type of therapy is often used to treat patients who have

4 THE SECOND APPROACH I HAVE CHOSEN TO COMPARE WITH HUMANISTIC-EXISTENTIAL PSYCHOTHERAPY IS COGNITIVE- BEHAVIORAL THERAPY. 5 COGNITIVE-BEHAVIORAL THERAPY IS A TYPE OF THERAPY THAT FOCUSES ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THOUGHTS, EMOTIONS, AND BEHAVIORS. 3 THIS TYPE OF THERAPY IS BASED ON THE BELIEF THAT OUR THOUGHTS INFLUENCE OUR EMOTIONS AND BEHAVIORS. The therapist works with the client to identify and change negative thoughts and beliefs (About Humanistic-Existential Psychotherapy - Therapy-Ole, n.d.). This therapy is often used to treat patients struggling with issues like anxiety, depression, and addiction. It can also help people manage chronic pain, stress, and sleep problems. 6 COGNITIVE-BEHAVIORAL THERAPY IS AN EVIDENCE-BASED TREATMENT THAT IS EFFECTIVE IN TREATING A VARIETY OF MENTAL HEALTH CONDITIONS. In addition, it is a safe and effective treatment used by people of all ages.

2 THERE ARE SEVERAL DIFFERENCES BETWEEN HUMANISTIC- EXISTENTIAL PSYCHOTHERAPY AND COGNITIVE-BEHAVIORAL THERAPY. One difference is that humanistic-existential psychotherapy focuses on the individual's experience and subjective reality, while cognitive-behavioral therapy focuses on the relationship between thoughts, emotions, and behaviors (Vaughan, 2019, p. 47). Another difference is that humanistic-existential psychotherapy is based on the belief that humans are essentially good and can grow and change. 3 IN CONTRAST, COGNITIVE-BEHAVIORAL THERAPY IS BASED ON BELIEVING THAT OUR THOUGHTS INFLUENCE OUR EMOTIONS AND BEHAVIORS. Another difference is that humanistic-existential psychotherapy often uses techniques such as reflection and questioning, while cognitive-behavioral therapy often uses techniques such as exposure and response prevention.

Humanistic-existential psychotherapy emphasizes the search for meaning in life, while cognitive behavioral therapy emphasizes the development of coping skills. In addition,

humanistic-existential psychotherapy emphasizes the capacity for self-determination and growth, while cognitive behavioral therapy emphasizes the therapist's role in guiding the patient (Kazantzis et al., 2018, p. 343).

Additionally, humanistic-existential psychotherapy is often used to treat patients struggling with issues such as anxiety, depression, and grief. In contrast, cognitive- behavioral therapy is often used to treat patients struggling with anxiety, depression, and addiction issues. 1 FINALLY, HUMANISTIC-EXISTENTIAL PSYCHOTHERAPY TYPICALLY LASTS FOR A SHORTER PERIOD THAN COGNITIVE-BEHAVIORAL THERAPY. Humanistic-existential psychotherapy typically lasts 10-12 sessions, while cognitive-behavioral therapy lasts 12-20 sessions. In addition, humanistic-existential psychotherapy emphasizes the search for meaning in life, while cognitive behavioral therapy emphasizes the development of coping skills. Finally, humanistic-existential psychotherapy is typically conducted in a one-on-one setting, while cognitive-behavioral therapy is often conducted in a group setting.

7 THE CHOSEN VIDEO IS "HUMANISTIC-EXISTENTIAL PSYCHOTHERAPY: 8 AN OVERVIEW" 9 TO EXPLAIN WHY HUMANISTIC-EXISTENTIAL PSYCHOTHERAPY WAS UTILIZED WITH THE PATIENT IN THE VIDEO AND WHY IT WAS THE TREATMENT OF CHOICE. In the video, the therapist uses humanistic-existential psychotherapy with a patient struggling with anxiety and depression. The therapist creates a supportive and non-judgmental environment where clients can explore their thoughts and feelings (About Humanistic-Existential Psychotherapy - Therapy-Ole, n.d.). The therapist also uses techniques such as reflection and questioning to help the client understand their thoughts and emotions.

The expected potential outcome if the second approach, cognitive-behavioral therapy, had been used with the patient would be that the patient would learn to identify and change negative thoughts and beliefs. The client will learn to understand and cope with

their thoughts and emotions. Cognitive-behavioral therapy is often used to treat patients struggling with anxiety, addiction, and depression (Waller et al., 2020, p. 1136). This type of therapy is based on the belief that humans are essentially good and that they can grow and change. The therapist works with the client to identify and change negative thoughts and beliefs. 3 THIS TYPE OF THERAPY IS BASED ON THE BELIEF THAT OUR THOUGHTS INFLUENCE OUR EMOTIONS AND BEHAVIORS. The therapist strives to help clients understand how their thoughts and emotions impact their behaviors. Cognitive-behavioral therapy aims to help clients learn to manage their thoughts and emotions more positively.

In conclusion, humanistic-existential psychotherapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy are two different approaches that can be used to treat patients with mental health disorders. Each approach has its strengths and weaknesses. As a PMHNP, it is important to be familiar with both approaches and know when to use them.
