Introduction

Big Data and Blockchain are amongst the top rising technologies tipped to transform

numerous industries, drastically changing the way organizations and businesses are run.

These technologies are not applied independently from each other. 1 WHEN THESE

TWO TECHNOLOGIES ARE APPLIED CONCURRENTLY, A LOT OF GOOD CAN

BE REALIZED. Like data science, blockchain is steadily changing the operations of many

industries. And while the focus of data science is harnessing data for appropriate

administration, blockchain ensures the trust of data through the maintenance of a

decentralized ledger (Zikratov et al., 2017, p.535).

1 DATA THAT ARE RECORDED ON BLOCKCHAIN ARE TRUSTWORTHY SINCE

THEY OUGHT TO HAVE GONE THROUGH A PROCESS OF VERIFICATION

THAT ENSURES ITS QUALITY. It also offers transparency because the transactions that

are carried out on the blockchain network are traceable (Zikratov et al., 2017, p.538). For

example, the blockchain technology can be used in detecting fraudulent forms and documents

concealed with digital autographs whereby computers process the digital autographs to verify

whether the document is authentic via a blockchain record. 1 IN MOST CASES, THE

INTEGRITY OF DATA IS ASCERTAINED WHEN DETAILS ABOUT THE ORIGIN

AND TRANSACTIONS RELATING TO A DATA BLOCK ARE STORED ON THE

BLOCKCHAIN AND VALIDATED OR VERIFIED AUTOMATICALLY BEFORE IT

IS ACTED UPON.

Prevention of Malicious Activities

1 BLOCKCHAIN USES A CONSENSUS ALGORITHM FOR VERIFICATION OF

TRANSACTIONS SO IT IS NOT POSSIBLE FOR A SINGLE NODE OR UNIT TO

THREATEN THE DATA NETWORK. IF A NODE STARTS TO ACT ABNORMALLY

IT CAN BE IDENTIFIED EASILY AND DELETED FROM THE NETWORK. The

blockchain network is so distributed making it almost impossible for a single unit to create

adequate computing power to modify the verification criteria and allow unwanted data in the

system. 1 TO CHANGE THE RULES OF THE BLOCKCHAIN NUMEROUS NODES

MUST BE POOLED TOGETHER TO MAKE A CONSENSUS. This cannot be achieved

by a single bad party.

Predictive Analysis

1 JUST LIKE OTHER DATA TYPES, BLOCKCHAIN DATA CAN BE ANALYZED

TO DISCLOSE IMPORTANT INSIGHTS ABOUT TRENDS AND BEHAVIORS AND

AS A RESULT, THEY CAN BE USED TO ENVISAGE FUTURE OUTCOMES.

Additionally, blockchain provides structured data collected from individuals or individual

devices (Jiang et al., 2018, p.4640). 1 TO MAKE PREDICTIONS, DATA SCIENTISTS

DEPEND ON LARGE SETS OF DATA TO ACCURATELY DETERMINE THE

OUTCOMES OF SOCIAL EVENTS SUCH AS CUSTOMER LIFETIME VALUE,

PREFERENCES OF CUSTOMERS, CHURN RATES, AND DYNAMIC PRICES

CONCERNING BUSINESSES. This function, however, is not limited to business-related

insights. Even data scientists in small companies can employ the computational power of

blockchain to carry out extensive predictive analysis tasks because of its distributed nature.

1 REAL-TIME DATA ANALYSIS

Just as it has been demonstrated in payment and financial systems, blockchain can make for

real-time cross border transactions. Many fintech innovators and banks are now exploring

blockchain as it affords fast real-time payment of huge sums regardless of geographic barriers.

In the same way, companies that need instantaneous extensive data analysis can make use of

the blockchain-enabled system to achieve that. With blockchain, banking institutions and

other companies can achieve instantaneous changes in data thus making it possible to make

quick decisions such as blocking suspicious transactions or tracking unusual actions (Jiang et

al., 2018, p.4642).

2 DATA SHARING MANAGEMENT

Data obtained from data studies can be stored in a blockchain network. This way project

groups don’t have to repeat analysis of data that has already been done by other groups or

erroneously reuse data that has already been used. Moreover, a blockchain platform can assist

data scientists in monetizing their work by perhaps trading outcome analysis that is already

stored on the blockchain platform (Shafagh et al., 2017, p.47).

Conclusion

Blockchain technology is still in its budding stages but that does not appear to be the case

because of the publicity the technology has received in a very short period. As blockchain

technology continues to grow and as more innovations continue to revolve around it, it is

expected that more will continue to be more useful and the area of data science will continue

to benefit from this technology. Having said that, it is important to note that, some minor

challenges have been noted particularly in big data that needs handling of exceptionally huge

amounts of data. One of the concerns is that the application of blockchain technology in this

respect will be very expensive to follow through. This is because it is expensive to store data on

a blockchain as opposed to traditional means of storage (Shafagh, et al., 2017 p.49). But as the

blockchain technology continues to evolve these concerns will be addressed because as we

have seen in the above discussion, blockchain technology has a huge potential of transforming

management and the use of data.
