Hazardous Event: 4 This hazardous event has put a strain between Jake his wife and their two sons. It has caused Jake to drink more and prevented him from sleeping due to recurring nightmares about an event that happened while on deployment. Vulnerable Stage: 5 Since his return to civilian life, Jake feels uneasy, watchful, and has concerns he will never feel “normal” anymore. Some other vulnerabilities since his return to civilian life are his difficulty sleeping, frequent heart palpations, moodiness, depression, anxiety, withdrawal from family and society, feeling “ready to go” at all times and exhaustion from always being alert. Precipitating Factor: 5 factor from the vulnerable state that cause loss or lack thereof. Jake’s excessive drinking, lack of interest with his family, his PTSD, depression, and anxiety all add fuel to his crisis. State of Active Crisis: 4 Jake’s current state of active crisis is that he is on the verge of losing his family. 5 He does not know how to properly cope with the nightmares, the uneasy emotions, and the feeling of exhaustion from his deployment to Iraq. Reintegration: 5 The reintegration stage for Jake is that if he does not get help for his alcoholism, he will lose his family (Turner, 2017). 6 Describe the client’s assets and resources. 5 Assets and resources available to Jake that would allow him to be resilient and return to a comfortable life that does not consist of constant fear and over drinking. Since Jake is a veteran, he has access to the Veteran Affairs Health Care Center that allows him to get mental health services and substance use treatment services (Susan V. Eisen, 2014). 5 Jake also has the support from his wife; he has a church he could use as a resource for venting. Describe how the social worker will intervene and promote resiliency 5 As the social worker, the goal is to get Jake to a state where he feels normal again and does not have to rely on alcohol and isolation as his coping mechanism. In order to satisfy this goal. 4 I would want to focus on treating and managing his PTSD by using Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. Jake will be able to start to process his trauma, emotions and circumstance at a time. 5 EMDR will not only help Jake stand up to the event that happened in Iraq, but it will also show Jake that he is strong enough to face the nightmares and the trauma. 7 Evaluate using crisis theory and resiliency theory to help the client 5 Using crisis theory and resiliency theory together assist the social worker help Jake understand that his crisis does not define him and to believe in his inner strength. It is essential that Jake knows that to be resilient he has to have faith in himself and have patience, he will get to where he wants to be which is normal again, but it takes time lots of self-awareness and support and connections (Clinic, 2017).
