Unit V
Unit 5 Introduction
Unit 5 Learning Objectives and Into the 2nd Half of the Course
Congrats!
You are beginning the second half of the course. Continue to keep the focus, keep the end goal in sight. Complete this class, complete your degree. Focus on the finish line. You are all winners because you are here to gain a competitive advantage, make yourself better. Don't sell yourself short.
Apply the feedback, improve. Always review your assignments and reflect on what you’ve learned each week. That is the biggest key: What did I learn? How can I apply this to be better? Below is a short animated video that brings to the forefront the Work Life Balance. It’s designed again to motivate you and remind you the impact effort, performance and determination have for you to be a success.
A friend of mine worked at Amazon for a year on an intern basis with full pay. He told me this: “John, think about cars. Everyone at Amazon is a Ferrari. They are fast, focused, no fluff, efficient and focus on winning every single day. If you are a Ford Pinto, Volkswagon Bug, or Caravan you won’t succeed. You might as well quit”. Listen to Bezos’ comments about change. That is the pace at Amazon. So, what is your Work Life Balance?
Last week we looked at the team building activities leaders can use to build better teams, create better internal interaction, and focus the team towards the goal. This unit we will look at problem solving, the steps taken to problem solve, the issues that arise during problem solving, and how to resolve conflict within teams. Nothing works perfectly and by studying how to resolve conflict a team can focus quicker on the goals of the organization.
This week we will look at problem solving
approaches to conflict between and within teams.
This is a very common occurrence. Why? Because
there is always perspective, bias, and power
positions that want to influence—almost like
politics. We will see what the author says about how
to defuse them.
Upon completion of this unit, students should be able to:
7. Identify problem-solving approaches to resolving conflict between and within teams.
7.1 Explain what is meant by an unhealthy agreement.
7.2 Explain the various team-building options that have been used successfully to reduce team conflict.
Next week in Unit 6 we will summarize the content to date by looking at the components of people, task, individual skills and personalities, and how they integrate into teamwork.
