Studies

Readings

Use your Psychopharmacology for Mental Health Professionals text to complete the following:

Read Chapter 9, "Medicating Children," pages 224–259. This chapter looks at recent trends in the use of psychotropic medications in children, some of the developmental issues involved, and consequences. It looks at medication for ADHD and mood stabilization medication specifically.

Use your Clinical Mental Health Counseling in Community and Agency Settings text to complete the following:

Read Chapter 11, "Counseling Children and Adolescents," pages 262–293. In this chapter, you will learn about developmental issues you should consider for clients of various ages, as well as biological and genetic influences that affect counseling. You will also learn about specific issues and concerns to take into account when working with children and adolescents.

Use the Capella library to complete the following:

Read Kaut's 2011 article, "Psychopharmacology and Mental Health Practice: An Important Alliance," from Journal of Mental Health Counseling, volume 33, issue 3, pages 196–222. In this article, the author attempts to place psychopharmacology within a wider context of mental health assessment. He addresses concerns about the role of drug therapy in mental health. Read Shailcross's 2012 article, "Client, Counselor, Prescriber," from Counseling Today, volume 55, issue 1, pages 38–42. In this article, the author examines the role of the counselor in relation to the prescriber of psychotropic medications for clients. It suggests specific areas the counselor must be aware of when working with clients who are taking psychotropic medications or for whom such medications may be indicated.

Group Discussion Preparation

For this week's group supervision, be prepared to discuss your views on the use of psychotropic medication with the population you work with at your site. You should be able to support your views with information from the professional literature.

Submitting Your Completed Fieldwork Hours

Record the hours completed at your fieldwork site this week via the time tracking system in CORE ELMS. Review the CORE ELMS Learner Guide to Time Tracking and Evaluations in CORE ELMS for specific details and step-by-step instructions for entering your hours into this system. It is essential that you follow these instructions carefully.

Your hours should be kept up-to-date in the CORE ELMS system. Be sure that you have entered all hours by the end of each week.

Each time you submit hours, your site supervisor will receive an e-mail message that will allow him or her to approve or deny the hours. A link to the CORE ELMS system will also be included in the e-mail message to allow your supervisor to log in to the system to review all of your hours in more detail.

When your supervisor has approved your hours via the CORE ELMS system, your fieldwork faculty instructor will then be able to review and approve or deny them as well.

Work closely with your site supervisor to ensure that all of your hours are submitted and approved weekly so your fieldwork faculty instructor can track your progress toward meeting the quarter's fieldwork requirements regularly. It is your responsibility to submit your hours on a regular basis and to ensure that your supervisor approves them in a timely manner.

To assist you in tracking the hours you complete in each of the required categories throughout the quarter, you can use the Quarterly Summary Time Log Excel spreadsheet.

You will find a copy of the Quarterly Summary Time Log located in the CORE ELMS system in the Documents Library. This spreadsheet is for your own use only—you will not submit it to your site supervisor, to your Capella faculty supervisor, or into CORE ELMS.

The recommended use of this spreadsheet is as follows: enter your hours on the spreadsheet in each category at the end of every week, then copy these hours each week directly into CORE ELMS. The CORE ELMS system will show your total accumulating hours over the weeks of the quarter. The spreadsheet will help you keep track of how you are doing in accumulating hours in each of the required categories, such as Direct Contact Hours and Site Supervision Hours.

Accuracy in CORE ELMS is essential. Your time tracking hours, once they have final approval from your fieldwork faculty instructor, will serve as the official documentation of your fieldwork hours for this quarter.

Your fieldwork faculty instructor will pull a report from the CORE ELMS system that shows all the hours you have completed in each category (for example, direct contact hours, site supervision hours, et cetera) and that have been approved by your site supervisor by Friday of Week 10 to determine if you have met the requirements for passing this quarter of fieldwork.

You must be sure to submit all of your hours, so your supervisor has sufficient time to review and approve them by this final deadline.

You cannot receive a final grade in the course if your hours are not submitted and approved on time.

Psychopharmacology With Children and Adolescents

Even though counselors cannot prescribe medications, they are regularly consulted by clients or a client's family members about the use of medications. This discussion is designed to help you consider some of the issues you may want to address with a parent or guardian of a child or adolescent who is prescribed a psychotropic medication. To develop your response, review the readings and any other resources you have identified.

For this discussion, consider the following questions.

What are some of the main things you would want to include in a conversation with the parents or guardians of a child or adolescent who is prescribed a psychotropic medication? What is important for you to know about the medication itself? When might it be necessary to consult with the prescribing doctor? How would you reach out to the doctor?

Your initial post and responses are expected to be substantive in nature and to reference the assigned readings, as well as other theoretical, empirical, or professional literature to support your views and writings. Cite and reference your sources using standard APA guidelines.

Note: In addition to answering the questions for this discussion, you are also required to complete a paragraph in which you reflect on the group supervision meeting this week.

Response Guidelines

Review and respond to the post of at least one other learner in a manner that advances the discussion in a meaningful way. Contribute to the conversation by asking questions, respectfully debating positions, or responding freely to the topic at hand.
