Initial Post Instructions This week's lesson presented a model of an annotated bibliography. Review the model, focusing on the components of the entry:

Reference citation Summary Credibility Assessment

Research a new source for your Pro-Con Position Paper (ideally, seek one that is in opposition to your stance/side). Then, draft 1 reference entry and 2 paragraphs for this new source.

Make sure to cite your source in APA format.

Follow-Up Post Instructions. Respond to at least two peers or one peer and the instructor. For peer feedback this week, please review the Guidelines for Evaluating Sources in our textbook (Seyler & Brizee, 2018, pp. 281-282). Consider the following prompts as you provide feedback to your peers:

What is the purpose of the text? Can you locate the author's credentials? Estimate the credibility of the text. Is this source an appropriate level for this degree of academic writing? Is the source up-to-date? Do you agree with how your peer intends to apply the source? Can you think of any other applications? Do you notice any inaccuracies in the APA formatting? Further the dialogue by providing more information and clarification.

Note: If you see that someone has already received feedback from two peers, please choose to help a peer who has yet to obtain feedback.

Greetings, everyone!!

In Week 5 we have the opportunity to review the model of an annotated bibliography (AB). Purposefully constructing an AB allows you, the writer/researcher, to summarize the information within the source, practice correct APA format for references, and evaluate the usefulness and credibility of the source as you prepare in gathering/collating effective evidence and support.

Folks have different levels of comfort and expertise in using APA; it’s important to know that memorization is not required (although with sufficient exposure to commonly used references such as online articles or books, the correct format becomes second nature). The style guide is, in essence, a book of rules, and you need to be able to “plug in” your information, following the appropriate “formula.” The good news is that APA format stays the same, and applies to everyone, whether a world-renowned physicist or a college freshman; people with good attention to detail will find it easier, and like most skills, demonstration of proper APA format improves with practice. Regarding confusion or errors in APA, remember that this is part of the learning process:

Discussions of mistakes made or weaknesses uncovered were often coupled with either specific or general ideas for improvement or expressions of appreciation for the real-world context of the project that made room for mistakes and the learning that can come from them. For example, one student found fault with a “lack of thoroughness” in one of her bibliographic instruction tools, citing as the reason her ‘unfamiliarity with APA citation. She concluded: “This remains an area for me to work on and improve my skill.” (Sparks & Rapp, 2011)

Of course, using and citing sources correctly helps the writer steer clear of plagiarism, which should always be avoided. Posted in the Week 5 Announcement is a short list of questions/answers that you might find helpful regarding the issue of plagiarism.

As a reminder, please make your initial post on or by Wednesday, and respond to two peers by Sunday. The discussion opens on Monday, August 5; please remember to include a correctly formatted APA in-text citation in your initial post.
