This sources assess the impact of imposing taxes on unhealthy foods on consumption and hence health outcomes. The authors of this article used the Canada case to study the effect of unhealthy food taxes. The source reports that the implementation of unhealthy food taxes significantly reduces purchase and consumption of sweetened beverages. After the taxes, all three socioeconomic groups in Mexico reduced consumption. However, the biggest impact was noted among the low and middle income consumers.

The authors of this article assess the benefits and disadvantages of imposing taxes on unhealthy foods. Frank, Grandi and Eisenberg assess the implications of raising taxes levied on unhealthy foods as an attempt to address obesity epidemic in America. Research suggests that implementing small excise taxes on unhealthy foods can create revenue for the government but may be ineffective in reducing obesity. These taxes may have a direct health effect on at risk populations as it helps reduce weight gain and obesity. However, these policies are pragmatic and hence unsustainable.

The main objective of the researchers was to verify if introducing taxes on unhealthy foods has positive impact on health. Given the number of countries imposing taxes on unhealthy diets are increasing, the authors sought to test the practicability of such a move. An increasing number of countries are introducing taxes on unhealthy food and drinks, but will they improve health. According to the researchers, price is a key determinant of food choices and diet. The article reports that taxing unhealthy foods may produce progressive health benefits among the poor since they are more sensitive to prices.
