Choose a work of art from the reading in Chapter 1. Discuss how the work is a reflection of the ancient culture that created it. Also, did anything particularly surprise or impress you about the work of art or the ancient people who created it?

The work of art from our reading that I chose is, “Fig. 1.9 Spruce Tree House, Mesa Verde, Anasazi culture, ca. 1200-1300. Building their houses, structures, irrigation works, and water impoundments with stone walls sealed with mud plaster and roofs of wooden beams layered in smaller twigs and branches all sealed with mud” (Sayre, 2013). With using their elements as their resources and putting them to use. They left little records of ever being there which is what I find so interesting and surprising. With building their housing in cliffs and making the most of their resources. They were to eventually leave their community in the late thirteenth century. No one knows why but speculate it was from the drought that lasted from 1276 to 1299. After doing some research I also found stated by David Roberts, “The Anasazi built magnificent villages such as a tenth-century complex that had as many as five stories and contained about 800 rooms. They built roads that networked 400-mile with some of them 30 feet wide. These roads across deserts and canyons. Also, within their walls they built sophisticated astronomical observatories” (Roberts, 2003). The thing that really impressed me about this culture is that they really utilized what they had and built what they could. Showing how to live off the land and what is given to them. Within the health care field critical thinking is very important and being able to use what you have on hand. This culture really reflects that and shows that they were able to use their resources. Also, when things got bad, they made the move and did what was best for their people. Critical thinking is very important in all aspects of life and when it is used can really make a difference to not only the person but to others as well.
