Eureka!
Bite of the Week
What’s up, everybody?! It’s your favorite bargain-seeking food connoisseurs coming at you
with a dope new spot! This week we delved into the new restaurant found right off of SDSU’s campus, Eureka! This place had burgers, beer, and beets.
Buckle up, this shit boutta get wild AF!
The 5 Dubbs
w/ brandon Last week we got the opportunity to try some Jamaican food, and damn, was that Jerk Chicken appetizer bomb! This week I decided to give Eureka! a shot and ordered one of their signature appetizers: the Fried Chicken Sliders! (and y’all know how much I love fried chicken lol)
1. Who?
So, “who the hell even is Eureka!?” you ask? Well, since the moment we walked in, the waitress kept bragging about how they were all about the community, and how they have been “Proudly serving the community of San Diego, California since 2013.” The staff kept talking about how they support local breweries and whatnot. (But I’ll just leave that to our Beerosseur.) Don’t get me wrong, it was nice at first, but damn, they just kept talking about it. Like, can I just eat my fried chicken sliders in peace?!
2. What?
At this point, y’all know I got me some dank Fried Chicken Sliders . An order comes with 2 sliders and their signature handcut fries. These bad boys had: mashed potatoes, reaper chili sauce (low-key spicy), and confetti slaw. And y’all already know my broke-ass got some water ‘cus ain’t nobody got money for expensive-ass drinks.
3. When?
Y’all already know we had to be loyal to our Ballin’ on a Budget motto (YOLO), so we showed up at 3:30 for Hoppy Hour (yes, it’s “Hoppy” not “Happy”!) Get this, drinks AND appetizers were on special! My originally priced $12 appetizer was now $9. That’s $3 whole dollars I could use for chips and soda!
4. Where?
Eureka! can be found right by the Aztec Student Union. It’s walking distance from the dorms for all you freshies, and right by the transit station for the commuters. They also validate parking just in case y’all recommend it to a non-Aztec. Plus, the Uber and Lyft pick-up/ drop-off spot was practically inside the restaurant! (Just in case y’all get a lil tipsy. )
It’s chill and honestly, the “industrial rustic” thing was working for me. The wooden benches were a standout. Especially ‘cuz I love to talk with everybody and their momma. They also let you sit outside on the patio, inside at a booth, or at the bar which is both inside and outside. What more do you want? They have outdoor games (bean bag toss, Jenga, and some-ring-on-a-string-thing) that lets you give your friends that “L.” And just in case you're antisocial-ass wants to grab a meal alone, don’t worry, they have TV’s.
5. Worth it?
All-in-all, this place is dope. I didn’t feel rushed or like I was bothering the staff whenever I had a question. (Unlike that Korean BBQ place from a couple weeks ago .) If you’re on a budget and wanna treat yourself to something other than fast food, Eureka! might be the place for you! I mean, you’re getting a burger like all the other places, but it’s, like, at a fancy, gourmet, boujee burger lounge.
Oh! I almost forgot! You actually don’t even have to buy food to be there. Some people were entering through the side gate and just sitting around the fireplace. I even noticed a professor grading some papers while he drank a beer. (Btw, great job, Susan! You got a 98/100 on your paper!)
Before and AFTER Expectations + Veggie Meal
w/ Masuda If any of you have ever heard of Eureka! then the first thing that probably comes to mind is burgers and drinks. That is what it is known for. Now, you all know that I am not one who drinks. So, my mind starts picturing more of a bar type place that is pretty loud with a small eating place. Well, there was a bar, HOWEVER, the place was not what I had imagined. The scenery was beautiful and guess what?... relaxing. If you want a night out for drinks and what not-- this is your place. If you want more of a relaxing night-- this is also your place. They’ve got both scenarios in one place! They’re kept pretty separate.
We chose to sit outside, and it was a cold day, okay? I was freezing. BUT… there were heaters right over our heads that kept me warm. Which was also something that I was not expecting. Overall, I enjoyed eating at Eureka! even though I imagined it as a place that I wouldn’t like.
NEXT… MY VEGGIE MEAL
Okay, my Veggie Babies, now since we all know this is a burger place and they must all be all confident about how amazing their meat patties are, allow your Veggie Goddess to tell you about their Veggie Beet Burger. It was the only Vegetarian option but you know you can substitute meat out of anything. Okay, so I have never had beets. Like I know they are vegetables and that they are this really red/purple color. But I didn’t know what it would be like in a patty. So the patty was just kidney beans and beets. So it was basically a purple patty with onions, arugula, pickles, tomato, and a lemon vinaigrette. If you like them colors then you will love this patty. It also came with french fries.
Okay, let me tell you about the buns. They were beautiful. They were crisped beautifully and sprinkled with sesame seeds. SO… I took my first bite and it was good. I would call it mildly good though.
In the end, I took more bites and it was a good burger but it isn’t one I would want to buy again for $12.93 (plus tip!). Honestly, it tasted like salad on bread. There was no cheese. You guys all know how much I obsess over cheese and there was no sauce to make the burger a little moist. It was very dry. You couldn’t taste the beets but it gave it a color. You could taste the kidney beans. It was decent and I would buy it again if it would cost around $4. But it doesn’t, so I’m good.
BEER-tastic w/ Sharlene
Eureka! Served only San Diego and SoCal brews; some local brews from Carlsbad and North Park were just $3-4! I was LEGIT-impressed to get a beer that cheap that wasn’t the basic beers at a party. I had the Cream Ale: Covington from North Park for $4 with my chicken sliders ($9). The drink was 5.3% alcohol, was light, and did not have a bitterness. The server is really the plug because she DID NOT check for my ID. I didn’t mind it because I’m of legal drinking age but since we are in College area there will be plenty of kids that are trying to finesse some alcoholic drinks. On the top right corner of each menu , it stated: “Proudly serving San Diego, CA since 2013.” This attracts SD natives and tourists as they cater specifically to serving locals. Matter of fact, all of their beer taps are brews from San Diego or general Southern California area. Eureka! is making a shout out to San Diego & its hard working people - as a customer, I am juiced to be at a restaurant that respects and honors local works. Eureka! has bottomless mimosas for $5 on the weekend brunch time -- best believe I’ll be back with my girls.
Eureka’s SPIT GAME
w/ Sharlene “I can get burgers and beer somewhere else.”
First of all, Eureka! can spit mad game to make you order anything on the menu and come back for more.
**CLICK CLICK**
SPIT GAME RATING 9/10. Eureka! has verbal, written, and visual rhetorical strategies to cater to the patrons: SDSU students (with their backpacks on the floor), chill-ass SDSU professors/faculty #ShoutoutToSager, and San Diego locals. Props to Eureka! for doing big thangs for the hood.
The restaurant will stay LIT as long as they continue to cater to locals, serve bomb food, have friendly service, and keep the chill/aesthetic vibe -- talk about using rhetoric. I’m nit picky af, so you know I had to **CLICK CLICK** them on every detail. FINAL REVIEW: the menu options and atmosphere attracted SDSU and city natives. Fresh food made with fresh ingredients. Open bar, tv, and games make it fun college students. Service is fast and friendly.
Will I come back? Best believe ittttt
Do I recommend? YES, hop into Hoppy Hour with ya crew.
What do I recommend? Anything bcus it’s ALL fresh

EXPECTATION VS Reality brandon
EXPECTATION: Tbh, I thought this was just another boujee restaurant trying to be “hip” or whatever. From walking past it, it seemed like the price would be hella expensive for a basic meal! As if college students aren't already spending hella money .
REALITY: Not gonna lie, it was dope. I am by no means boujee, but the menu managed to make me feel fancy even in a casual setting Take advantage of the Hoppy Hour specials ‘cuz we Ballin’ on a Budget!
Sharlene EXPECTATION: This is just another on campus joint that is expensive af -- the school is always tryna take my money. Probably has annoyed college staff that don’t want to deal with other college students. I probably will be annoyed by all the college students there.
REALITY: Hoppy Hour, or no hour - they have the best deals for the quality of their products. The staff was super nice! I love the chill vibe - it felt like I was at a backyard party on the patio. I can bring anyone (my mom or friend) to this restaurant & it’s def reasonably affordable!
Masuda
EXPECTATION: This place is mainly for those who want a loud night out with drinks. You wouldn’t feel comfortable here if you aren’t about that life. It’s all about burgers and drinks and not much more.
REALITY: This place is a lot more that that. As I stated above, you can have your veggie options when you aren’t about the burgers and drinks. The place has quiet seating areas for those that are not looking for a loud night out. You will definitely feel at comfort, especially with the outside seating, underneath the warm heaters above your head. Don’t judge before giving it a shot!
