Running A Chi-Square Test With Summarized Data In A 2 Way Table In Minitab
Note that columns with numbers cannot contain any text! Therefore, columns can only be labeled in the unnumbered row above row 1, which is meant for column titles.
Make column 1 the column for the row titles.

3. Select “Summarized data are in two-way table”
Note: your window may not look like this, depending on what you did prior to this analysis. Minitab will always show the entries from the last time a menu was used. If you already tried this test before going through these instructions, you may see your previous entries in the various fields.
The window will change to include a field “Columns containing the table”.
4. Put the cursor in the field “Columns containing the table” (i.e. click on it). This will show the columns from the worksheet that have numbers in them, identified by the column titles (see next slide).
5. Select both columns, by dragging down the cursor on their titles. When selected, they will become highlighted in blue.
6. Click “Select” at the bottom of the field.

The selected columns will now appear in the field: “Columns containing the table”.
7. Click on the field “Rows” to identify the column with the row labels.
This will show all columns from the worksheet, including columns with text (see next slide).
8. Select the column with your row labels (in this example it is C1 (Treatment), by clicking on it. When selected, it will become highlighted in blue.

The column title for the row labels will appear in the filed “Row”.
10. Type in a name for the column category. That name will appear in the results report.
(For this example the title “Survival status” was chosen).
Note: There is only space for a column title in the worksheet, but no space for another row with text, for example for the column category. That is why you are given the opportunity here to enter a column category. Other examples for categories from class would be smoking status or hypertension. The column category and row labels are optional, but they help you sort out the results.

11. Click on “Chi-Square” to open the chi-square submenu.
12. Check the box next to “Chi-square test”. Then click “OK” to close the window.
Note: you can leave the remaining boxes unchecked. I find Minitab has a disorganized way to show these, so the output may become confusing.

13. Click on “Other Stats” to open the submenu.
14. Check the box next to “Fisher’s exact test”. Then click “OK” to close the window.

15. Check the boxes to display counts and row percentages, if you haven’t done so already. Then click “OK” to close the window and
start the calculations.

The results will appear in the results window above the worksheet.
To move the results to another program, click the small arrow next to the top row. Select the destination from the menu that will appear (best to use Word, or clipboard to copy into Excel).
Note: other arrows will appear next to the subtitles of the report (like the table with the counts and row percentages), when you mouse over the respective section. These arrows will open the same “send to menu”. HOWEVER, this will only send the respective portion of the report to Word or the clipboard, not the complete report.
If you select “Send to Word” you need to have Word open on your computer. Minitab will automatically create a new Word file and paste the report into it.
