Group Therapy
Introduction
1 One of the most common mental illnesses, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), may cause significant impairment and suffering. Nearly everyone who is hospitalized for mental health issues has received therapy. Sufferers have a significant therapeutic gap to fill. An anxiety disorder may be traced back to stress, trauma, and even childhood trauma. Depression and anxiety disorders may be treated with both psychotherapy and medication. Many people are turning to mind-body treatments to help them cope with stress. Non-pharmacological therapies such as yoga are increasingly being used to help individuals maintain their health and well-being, and anxiety is a prevalent symptom of today's modern life.
2 Group Therapy Techniques and How Well they were Demonstrated "YOGA" 1 is the name given to the group therapy used in the video. 3 "Yoga boosts blood flow and levels of hemoglobin and red blood cells, allowing for more oxygen to reach the body's cells and enhancing their function" (Sahni et al., 2021). This group's yoga class was quite useful. Yoga's benefits for stress and anxiety management were originally described by our therapist. They were able to express themselves freely both before and after. When practicing yoga, the goal is to cultivate "mindful tranquility and a sense of well-being." Yoga increases the body's ability to respond to stressful situations by restoring the autonomic regulating reflex systems associated with stress (Simon et al., 2021).
1 What evidence from the literature supports the techniques demonstrated?
Chronic stress, anxiety, and depression have been linked to major physical health issues such as cardiovascular disease if stress triggers are not addressed. As a medication for the mind and body, yoga has been shown to integrate a person's physical, mental, and spiritual aspects. Stress-related ailments might benefit from this in terms of a person's overall health. An increasing number of studies have connected stress to various chronic medical disorders and diseases such as heart disease and strokes. In order to lessen the burden of illness, stress management and the reduction of negative emotional states should be a primary emphasis. As a stress-reduction method, yoga has also been used in the past. 1 Studies of yoga in clinical trials have been undertaken to evaluate its therapeutic effects and benefits on its users since yoga is a kind of CAM that induces a physiological sequence that reduces the body's stress response (Can et al., 2020). As a result of yoga's soothing and rejuvenating effects on the sympathetic nervous system and flight-or-fight reaction, many people who suffer from mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, stress, and sleeplessness seek therapy for these issues. Mental stress is one of the most major health issues in our century, according to research from the World Health Organization (WHO) (Bridges & Sharma, 2017). Individual preferences and needs dictate which stress-reduction methods are most effective for each person. These stress management approaches are useful in reducing stress. Traditional forms of physical and mental exercise, such as Tai Chi and yoga, as well as more recent ones, such as mindfulness meditation and cognitive training, are good examples (Singh, 2019).
1 What did you notice that the therapist did well?
Practicing yoga with this group was quite useful. The therapist's introduction to yoga and its stress-reduction benefits proved beneficial. 1 Before and after the experiment, teenagers were allowed to express their feelings. Additional demonstrations of yoga poses may also take place. According to teenagers, yoga may be performed in any position. The practice area was also one of my favorites.
1 Explain something that you would have handled differently.
Anxiety and tension may be reduced by practicing yoga poses, which the therapist did a great job of explaining. Instead of prescribing yoga for anxiety management, different approaches for therapeutic stress reduction should have been presented to them. 1 For instance, there should have been more emphasis on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).
What is an insight that you gained from watching the therapist handle group therapy?
In this psychotherapy session, I was able to see the positive effects of yoga on adolescents' anxiety regulation. As a result of the tranquility of yoga, the benefits include decreased muscle aches and pains as well as regular breathing and improved cardiovascular health. 4 Yoga may be beneficial for those with pre-existing medical conditions, such as arthritis, cancer, and mental illness (Bridges, & Sharma, 2017).
1 Now imagine you are leading your own group session. How would you go about handling a difficult situation with a disruptive group member?
To avoid escalating problems, I will employ therapeutic techniques while dealing with challenging members in my group session. People dispute to agree and create different methods to cope with difficulties, which is a natural way of establishing togetherness. I shall remain professional, avoid arguing, be clear, and listen to their concerns.
1 How would you elicit participation in your group?
Goals and objectives should be clearly stated and achievable so that participants may be encouraged to participate in a group. Get to know one other by giving a quick introduction so that everyone may feel comfortable expressing themselves and sharing their thoughts and feelings. A more productive and concentrated section may be achieved with this method of organization. It is important to develop activities for the group that encourage debate, deep learning, and goal attainment.
1 What would you anticipate finding in the different phases of group therapy?
In group therapy, the stages include forming or orientation, storming or transition; norming or cohesion; 1 performing or working; and adjourning or ending (Simon et al., 2021). To go through these stages of treatment, you'll need a variety of abilities, such as encouragement, adaptability, empathy, and a genuine desire to assist others.
