1) Argument (20) ________

Does the essay present an argument clearly and logically? Is the thesis statement strong and argumentative? Is there a counterargument?

2) Support (20) _________

Do all of the body paragraphs work to support the argument? Is there sufficient evidence to prove the author’s thesis? Has the author used a story that we read, as directed by the assignment?

3) Intro / Conclusion / Organization (20) _________

Are the introduction and conclusion paragraphs strong and well developed? Does this author organize all of the paragraphs well? Does the author make smooth transitions between paragraphs?

4) MLA Format (20) _________

Is the paper in MLA format, including the headers and margins? Does the paper include a Works Cited page as part of the document? Does the author cite correctly? Are other elements of MLA format used correctly in the paper?

5) Grammar and Flow (20) _________

Does the author follow the conventions of scholarly writing, avoiding slang and informal language? Does the author avoid writing in first and second person (I, we, our, you, your, etc.)? Does the author avoid contractions? Is the paper grammatically clean and reads well?
